Women in the Profession Section hosts Social Media CLE

By Sarah Cipperly

WIP hosted a dynamic panel of speakers at a CLE on April 29 concerning the use of Social Media for lawyers.  Leading the discussion on ethics were Paula Frederick, General Counsel of the State Bar of Georgia, and Jenny Mittelman, Deputy General Counsel of the State Bar of Georgia.  Paula and Jenny used real-world examples of lawyers who have gone afoul of the ethical rules governing lawyers when using social media.  As always, Paula and Jenny were both educational and entertaining.

Following the ethics discussion, a panel of attorneys led a discussion on Professionalism and Social Media.  Past WIP Board Member Judge Kimberly Adams moderated the panel which include Past State Bar President and trial lawyer Robin Frazer Clark, WIP Board Member and communications law expert Megan Hodgkiss, and Atlanta Bar Member and small firm practitioner Monica Hanrahan Freitag.  The panel focused its discussion on using social media to promote one's own practice and the practice of law generally.  The panel had a wide variety of perspectives on the use of social media, from tweeting live from trials to celebrating court victories on Facebook.

Thank you to Judge Adams and WIP Board Member Kimberly Charles for organizing a well-attended and successful event!

Young Professionals Raise $11,460 for Foreverfamily's Summer Camp
By Jessica Stern

"Are we going to camp this year?" twelve-year old Amanda asked with excitement, but also doubt, as she remembers the summer Foreverfamily first took her and her two brothers outside Atlanta's city limits to a place not surrounded by barbed wire. She was six.

Each month, Foreverfamily provides transportation to Amanda and her two brothers as well as nearly 50 other Atlanta children so that each may have a face-to-face visit with their mom who is in prison. Travelling two hours to see your mom once a month is not the life any child dreams of, chooses, or deserves.

The Leader Within
By Megan Hodgkiss

"We are all leaders in some way, and we should feel comfortable in claiming that, participating in it, and enjoying that." Caroline Tanner, Partner at Holland & Knight, LLP, shared these sentiments as the Keynote Speaker at the annual Leader Within event. The popular program and CLE, co-hosted by the Atlanta Bar Association's Women in the Profession Section and the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers, took place in January at the State Bar of Georgia. The Leader Within is an intensive training seminar geared towards attorneys who want to develop their leadership skills.

The Leader Within began with a series of break-out sessions on a variety of personal and professional issues which attorneys face: alternative work styles, growing your personal brand, evolution of the billable hour, and business development in large law firms. This year's speakers hailed from non-traditional, small and large law firm environments, and practice in a wide variety of legal fields. They all provided the small groups with excellent advice on becoming a leader in the workplace.

The crowd consisted of cancer survivors, friends, families and others determined to eradicate the disease.

The program was simulcast to the State Bar's Coastal Georgia Office in Savannah and South Georgia Office in Tifton.

This substantive collaboration was initiated by the Atlanta Bar Association. It included the State Bar of Georgia, the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism, the Multi-Bar Leadership Council, the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers, six additional minority bar associations, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the Atlanta Public Schools.
