WIP and Foreverfamily, Inc.

WIP continues to strengthen our commitment with Foreverfamily, Inc with the goal to provide unending support to Atlanta youth with a parent behind bars. Especially after our members received the Celebrating Service Award from the Atlanta Bar, we realized just how important this partnership is to the staff and participants of the program. We are the only consistent group of volunteers who not only are reliable each month so that the program can successfully function, but our members constantly find new ways to help beyond the monthly community service project.

During the holidays our members seek contributions so the child's current caretaker can provide Thanksgiving meals, and at Christmas we make sure that every young person receives a gift. The generosity of our members does not end there. Currently, we have a member creatively brainstorming ways to raise money to provide the program facility with a portable dishwasher. (Family dinners with fifty people using proper tableware settings produce a lot of dirty dishes for a Tuesday night! Foreverfamily, Inc. strives to stay eco-conscious and wants the kids to experience a nicely set table). Another WIP member has joined Foreverfamily's Young Professionals Board with the goal of raising $10,000 before April to allow each child to experience a week of summer camp outside of the city.

WIP excitedly accepts new volunteers and those willing to pitch in with ingenuity and a helping hand! Please contact Jessica Stern (Jessica@sternlawfirm.us) or Taylor Tribble (ttribble@huffpowellbailey.com) to get involved.

Judicial Leadership in the Public Interest Event on November 14, 2013
Written by: Beth Stephens, Chair of the Public Interest Law Section

The Public Interest Law Section is extremely grateful to WIP for their co-sponsorship of an incredible panel discussion on November 14, 2013 entitled "Judicial Leadership in the Public Interest." This event celebrated judges who have made valuable contributions to the public interest on and off the bench. This was the most impressive group of female judges that I have had the privilege to hear speak, and they are all truly exemplary of what we mean when talk about judicial leadership.

The moderator was Sharon N. Hill, Former Fulton County Juvenile Court Judge and now Executive Director of the Georgia Appleseed Center for Law & Justice. Our panelists included: The Honorable Dorothy T. Beasley, Former Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia and now a Mediator and Arbitrator with Henning Mediation & Arbitration Service, Inc.; The Honorable Leah Ward Sears, Former Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court and now a Partner at Schiff Hardin LLP; The Honorable Susan E. Edlein, Fulton County State Court Judge; and Chief Judge Cynthia D. Wright of the Fulton County Superior Court. Chief Judge Wright was our surprise special guest, and she left immediately following the event to spend the night out in the cold with homeless youth to support an organization called Covenant House. Talk about judicial leadership in the public interest!

All of the judges on this panel and the moderator, Sharon Hill, have worked to make our community better. They have engaged in efforts to make our courts and courts in developing democracies overseas more efficient, more transparent and more accessible to pro se litigants. They have served on commissions and task forces aimed at improving the lives of children and families in our State and promoting equality and diversity in our profession. Off the bench, they have donated their time and talents to nonprofit organizations and to various causes in their communities. It was an honor to hear them share their personal motivations and their stories of triumph with us.
