May 2015 Events and Information

Dear ,

DVMS May Events and Information Intro
DVMS May Events and Information Intro

A relatively quiet month for events and activities in May. The big news is that this is the month Skye leaves us for her maternity leave. We are all -- staff, parents, and students -- going to miss her very much. We'll be sure to keep you updated on how mom and new baby are doing.

I'm sure most of you have seen Holly in the office trying on Skye's big shoes, which Holly filled during Skye's previous maternity leave. Holly is returning from her own maternity leave to take over from Skye until her return, provided we haven't fallen apart without her by then.

Remember, Friday, May 1, is Grandparents' Day, from 9:00am - 11:00am. (Upper Elementary East Grandparents' Day has been shifted to the afternoon of May 1 to accommodate their Friday morning tennis).

This is the annual opportunity for the children's grandparents to come and spend a part of the morning in the Montessori environments with their grandkids. This is always a fun day that the children look forward to. Please remind the grandparents to limit their visits to 30 minutes in the classroom. Also, unless previously arranged and notified, we ask that grandparents do not ask if the child can leave early with them. This has caused a number difficult situations in the past. Thank you.

Tuesday, May 12 -- Strata: What to Expect Next Year: "What to Expect Next Year" will give students and their families an introduction to adolescent Montessori education and the day-to-day activities of the program. The evening begins at 6:00 and should run until approximately 7:30.

Wednesday, May 13 -- Elementary Cross Country Run: Our school has been invited to take part in a Spring Cross Country Run organized by the Catholic Youth Orgnization. The run will take place at Marydale Park, 5999 Chippewa Rd., Mount Hope. A bus will take our runners to and from the event during school hours (8:30 - 2:00). Lower and Upper Elementary children who wish to run have signed up with Janice and training is taking place at DVMS, during recess, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Parents are welcome to come and watch (there is a $5 parking fee). If you plan to drop off at or pick up from the event, please let us know in advance.

Wednesday, May 13 -- Parent Education Evening 5:30-7:00  (Postponed from April): Tony's brother, Dr. Mike Evans, will be our guest speaker for this event. Dr. Evans's talk is entitled "Healthy Parent, Healthy Child: Putting on Your Oxygen Mask First."

The talk will run through the art and science of everyday habits and things that are "good for a lot of things," what Dr. Evans calls "The Better Life Experiment." The evidence around better eating, sleeping, thinking, moving, and building social capital (better relationships) will be reviewed. Dr. Evans will also touch on the changing clinic, behaviour change, and will show media and films made in his lab.

Dr. Evans is a staff physician at St. Michael's Hospital, an Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine, and a scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute.

"Dr. Mike" is known worldwide for his work in innovative health messaging to the public. His media lab fuses patients with creatives (filmmakers, designers, writers) and experts (patients, clinician, researchers). His lab and film company have pioneered "peer-to-peer healthcare" where they tell or capture evidence-based stories and then embed them in relationships of care. Traditionally, this has been caregiver to patient, but Dr. Evans and his team are more interested in the social networks of the public. He is most known for his whiteboard series on YouTube that has been viewed by over 11 million people. Topics range from stress management to acne to quality improvement to the early childhood brain. The lab is just launching the Better Life Experiment.

His radio show on CBC's Fresh Air is listened to widely, he was a doctor at the Sochi Olympics, and started a Med School for the Public at the University of Toronto.

His work has been profiled in a wide range of publications from Journal of the American Medical Association to The BMJ (British Medical Journal) to Walrus to Readers Digest to the hit Netflix series "Orange is the New Black." Recent awards include being chosen as the top 10 innovators in health by the Canadian Medical Association, top 45 Canadians over 45, and the gold medal in social media at the Web Health Awards.

In 2014, he was given the first worldwide Endowed Chair in Patient Engagement (and Childhood Nutrition) at the University of Toronto, and he was awarded the McNeil Medal from the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of outstanding communication of science and medicine to the public.

As always, childcare services will be provided by Strata. Click here for details and to sign up.
