Dundas Valley Montessori School
March 2015 Events and Information

Dear ,

You've all got your tickets (not really necessary for the event) and we're very excited to show you the potential new home of Strata: Montessori Adolescent School tomorrow. Come by anytime between 10:30 and 2:00 on Saturday, February 28, to have a look at the building and grounds of this incredible property. If all goes according to plan, starting in September 2015, Strata will be located at the former Bagnall Lodge at Canterbury Hills, 575 Lions Club Rd., right in the heart of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area! Click here for a map. Right now the forecast is for sunny and not too cold, so come have a look around then take advantage of the outstanding beauty and trail system the area has to offer.

For families whose children are moving up to Strata next year, please also bring any questions about Strata's adolescent education program to this event. We are hoping that between this day and your lunch date at Strata we can orient yourselves and your children to the new adventure that awaits them.

Thank you for taking the time to read the DVMS Event and Information Parent Newsletter. Please add this important information to your calendar. All of the event details can also be found on the DVMS website calendar at the link above. The website calendar is a Google calendar, so you can easily add important dates directly to your own.
March 2-9, 2015

Monday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 3 -- DVMS Parent-Teacher Interviews:

A different schedule than our regular Parent-Teacher Interviews -- Monday and Tuesday, 2:00-6:00 both days. Child care will be available during your interview time. Please sign up for your interview timeslot by clicking right here.

Monday, March 2 -- Lower Elementary North Skating:

Lower North will be skating for the last time this year at Grightmire Arena on Market St. in Dundas, from 2:00-3:00 pm. They walk to and from skating.

They require skates and a helmet that has a CSA sticker (bike helmets are acceptable, but not preferred). Please ensure that helmets are properly fitted and that skates are laced in a way that allows children to put them on themselves. Parents are welcome to join us for skating, and we love as much help as we can get to tie up skates.

Monday, March 2 - Friday, March 6 -- Strata Montessori French Odyssey: The Strata students will be travelling by train to Montreal for their annual French Odyssey. This is a great example of the integrated learning program that is Montessori adolescent education. They have been studying New France and British North America this semester, as well as maple syrup and hoop house gardening. Besides organizing all of the transportation and accommodation details, the students will each be preparing a brochure and guided tour in Montreal related to a specific historical figure they have chosen to study. They will also be visiting some sites such as Mount Royal, the Biosphere, and the Insectarium, continuing their outdoor education program they have been undertaking with Luna by taking on some cross-country skiing and snowshoeing adventures, and, of course, benefitting from an incredible immersion experience.

Thursday, March 5 -- Upper Elementary Skiing (maybe, ha!):

The Monday, February 2 ski trip was cancelled due to snow (?!?). That trip was rescheduled to Feb. 23, which was subsequently cancelled due to extreme cold.

One more try: they will now ski on Thursday, March 5. (There will be no outdoor education on Friday, March 6).

The children will travel to and from Chicopee by bus; they need to be at DVMS no later than 8:00 a.m. on skiing days. DVMS is covering the cost of skiing, transportation, and a majority of rental fees. Thank you all, once again, for submitting your waivers and rental fees on time.

Friday, March 6 -- Lower Elementary South Swimming: Lower South will be swimming for the last time this year at the Dundas Pool on Market St. They leave DVMS at 1:45 and return for 3:30. We walk to and from swimming. Children require a bathing suit and towel, in a bag that they can easily carry to and from the pool. If they need to wear goggles, please ensure they are properly fitted before they head to the pool.

March 9-20, 2015
Monday, March 9 -- Friday, March 20 -- March Break: DVMS is offering both Casa and Elementary camps during the first week of March Break. Please click here for details and to register. As always, please register as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly and avoid last-minute cancellations. Thank you.
March 23-31, 2015
Monday, March 23 -- First Day of Spring Term: Welcome Back!

Tuesday, March 24 -- Strata: Montessori Adolescent School Enrolment Packages Due.

Tuesday, March 24 -- Thursday, April 2 -- Go Green Book Sale Donations: A note from some Upper Elementary students:

On Wednesday, April 22, The Upper Elementary students will be hosting a book sale to raise funds for the Tuleeni Orphan's Home, who are building a clean water system. We would appreciate donations of books between March 24 and April 2 at the front office.
