The past few weeks brought several opportunities for me to elevate the voice of family caregivers with leaders in healthcare. It was a privilege to lead a discussion with "brain" experts in stem cell and genomics research, Dr. Steven Hyman and Dr. Brian Wainger, underscoring the future impact
of low funding levels at the NIH on the families of patients living with neurological disorders. The following week, I met with thought leaders in medicine, business, public health and public policy for a day at Harvard to discuss opportunities in Healthcare Innovation. Last week, I dined with hundreds of women (and a few adventurous men) to support friends Dr. Paula Johnson and Dr. Jill Goldstein, whose groundbreaking work in Women's Health explores how gender impacts health across the lifespan. And finally, an article I co-authored with Dr. Sachin Jain, Chief Medical Officer at CareMore and Dr. Elaine Goodman of the Brigham and Wellframe was published. Our message? If we want to truly impact health of aging parents and the cost of care, physicians need to focus more attention on the health of mid-career family caregivers.

Click on the sidebar to read the article.  The video link to the NIH discussion is long but informative. I welcome your thoughts as I continue to advocate for your families, clients and patients.

Here is news from across the network.

Stop, Identity Thief!

Recently tech blogger Laurie Orlov reminded us about the 80 million Blue Cross Blue Shield subscribers whose identity was stolen by hackersLaurie challenged entrepreneurs to focus on health information identity protection with the same fervor as other financial data. Until they do, one way to prevent thieves from opening a charge card using stolen identity is to freeze files at all three credit bureaus. For some elders and boomers, who have all the credit cards and mortgage loans they need, this simple step may be a wise precaution to consider; the files may be unfrozen temporarily as needed. Here's how to freeze your files.

Your Money, Your Children

Our children don't need to be wealthy to gain insight from friend Coventry Edwards-Pitt book, "Raised Healthy, Wealthy and Wise."  By focusing on families whose children reach adulthood without being spoiled by their family's affluence, Covie offers parenting strategies that work. Her thoughtful book mirrors the wisdom of psychologist Dr. Mary Pipher in an old favorite, "The Shelter of Each Other" that first raised the alarm about consumerism targeting children. Consider purchasing these books for the new mothers and fathers in your family.

Careers: Launched & Re-Launched

Will your money last as long as you will? Longevity trends mean that millions of Baby Boomers and GenXers will live into their 80s and 90s. For those men and women who take career breaks, friend Carol Cohen, founder of iRelaunch recently began offering her wildly successful career relaunching seminars on-line. Humorous and helpful regardless how long your career break or your original profession, iRelaunch also connects participants with employers who value your life experience. Learn more here

The Village People

Do you have older relatives or clients trying to age in place? One option is to join a local virtual retirement village. Villages are "membership-driven, grass-roots organizations that, through both volunteers and paid staff, coordinate access to affordable services including transportation, health and wellness programs, home repairs, social and educational activities, and other day-to-day needs." Click here to see if there is a village nearby. If not. start one! Learn more about the benefits of villages here and plan to attend the National Village Gathering in October.

The Balancing Act

Here are the facts. Forty percent of all elder hospitalizations are caused by falls. One out of two women will experience bone fractures caused by osteoporosis. Women stop building their bone density by age 25.

So, what should we do? Encourage our parents and older relatives to stay mobile, practice Tai Chi twice weekly to improve balance, or work with a physical therapist to build strength. For the 40+year olds among us - aim for 150 minutes each week of exercise such as walking, running, swimming, dancing. Include strength training twice each week. If you can't get to a gym, practice Yoga by the Numbers at home. For our teens? Encourage fitness, sports, sunshine and yogurt. Then, of course, they could clean their rooms.
