Service Opportunity
Great Opportunity for Community Service
The City of Newport News is looking for volunteers for the 2016 ONE CITY MARATHON. The event is on March 13, 2016. Units are encouraged to help where they can as well as show their BSA pride - staff
at a water station or a relay point bring your troop colors and show the BSA is an active part of our community.
One important note is that currently we do not have group registrations, so each volunteer will need to be registered separately but can comment on the group they are affiliated with. Some of the volunteer stations do have a age requirement, so make sure that you check into that before you commit. Also one of our own, Tommy Wilkinson with Crew 595 and the Lodge's AIA Advisor is the Safety and Operations Section Chief for the Marathon and he is in need of 200 responsible volunteers to assist him with Traffic Control (must be at least 18 years old). This group is one of the hardest jobs. It is a long sometimes boring job but critical to the safety of the nearly 4,000 anticipated participates. So if you want to help our own, consider this position. If you have a young group, look at the other opportunities to provide community service.

Hello Fellow Scouters,
I have some much anticipated news for you!!! The 13th Edition of the Boy Scout Handbook was set to arrive at Supply Group January 3rd, 2016 with a ship date to the Scout Shops across the country on January 6th, 2016 , which means we could see the new books arriving here around the 12th or so ( fingers crossed ). I have 306 books arriving on my initial order. I also will have the new Scout Emblem ( which will be presented to a boy upon earning the new rank) arriving soon as well. If any of your boys are about to earn the Scout Emblem and would like one of the old patches for nostalgias sake, please get your advancement reports in soon as the old patches will be leaving towards the end of the month, never to be sold again.
Pinewood Derby is here and I would like to thank all of you for making this our bestselling Pinewood Derby season so far!!!! Way to go to all of our packs!! We have sold almost 1,400 cars to date, and thanks to you that puts money right back into our council for OUR boys!!! Please remember all the accessories are available for purchase here at the Scout Hut as well.
Also, Blue and Gold merchandise will soon be making its appearance and I am beginning to prepare for Crossover ceremonies for all of our up and coming Boy Scouts. Pack leaders, please remember to reach out to The Order of the Arrow ( OA ) chapters in your districts for assisting with Crossover Ceremonies. They were at my son's Crossover and they really helped make it truly memorable and amazing. I can't sing their praises enough. So, get in touch with the OA first chance you get or reach out to me here at the Hut and I will get you in contact with the right people. On that note, please give me a call if you plan on preordering arrows for your AoL recipients, as I will get those ordered for you ASAP so parents and/or leaders can start working on them right away for their boys. If there is anything else I can do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me here at the shop. I can't express enough how much I appreciate each and every one of you and how much you do for all of our scouts! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Yours in Scouting,
Jennifer McPeters
