New Scout Shop Manager
The Colonial Virginia Council is pleased to welcome Jennifer McPeters to our staff as the new Scout Shop Manager.

"I'm very excited to introduce myself!  My name is Jennifer McPeters and I am your new Scout Shop manager.  I am also a Scout mom and leader here in the Colonial Virginia Council, so please let me take a few moments to introduce myself to you.

I am originally from Florida and moved to Newport News in 2008.  I've been in retail and customer service for almost 15 years and my family and I reside in Newport News where my husband Daniel works for Newport News Shipbuilding as a designer.  Our son will be entering the 6th grade at Crittenden Middle School.  We have been active in Scouting since Andrew joined Pack 143 in Newport News as a Bear Cub and we were also members of Pack 184 in Hampton where Andrew earned his Arrow of Light and completed his cub career.  Andrew, Daniel and I are members of Troop 218 in Hampton where Andrew is now working on his Second Class rank.

I have completed all my Cub Scout and Boy Scout training (with the exceptions of Powder Horn and Wood Badge, which I look forward to doing in the future) so I have met many of you in my travels and classes and I look forward to many years of partnerships with you in the time to come.  Thank you to all whom I've seen at the shop for your warm welcomes so far"    ----Jennifer McPeters

Bayport Busy Beavers
The Bayport Busy Beavers (BBB) challenge Colonial Virginia Council units and the Wahunsenakah Lodge chapters to build and donate one picnic table to Bayport Scout Reservation.  Little to no seating exists outside of the mess hall and camp store for Scouts to gather and rest their weary bodies after the evening meal, or at other times during a busy summer camp day.  A minimum of six tables are needed in the wooded area across the walk-way from the Birdsong Admin Office, and another six tables under the trees across the walk-way from the Scoutmasters' Lounge.

There are two minor modifications to the attached Council approved picnic table plan.  First, regular nuts and lock washers replace the self-locking nuts on the 3/8" x 3 1/2" carriage bolts.  Second, a length of treated 2x4 was screwed to the bottom of the table's feet to prevent the feet from sinking into the ground.  Click here to view the plans for making a table.

The table is constructed from treated lumber.  To ensure uniformity in color, please do not apply any stain.  Stain will be applied at camp using the Council approved color.

Attached is a photo of the first table constructed and donated by the BBB on Wednesday, 6 May.  The cost of materials is about $100.  Contact Ron Davis to arrange a discount that will bring the cost down to $90.

Ron Davis

Is Woodbadge for You

What Can I Learn At Wood Badge?

There's a lot we must know and be able to do as a volunteer Scout leader; so much so volunteering Scouting really rises to the level of a profession.

There's Scouting philosophy (vision, mission, and values), policies, procedures, program, organization, and methods. And there's the knowledge and skills we need to be effective leaders and followers in our volunteer youth development organization.

But the volunteer Scouting "profession" is not like any work we do outside of Scouting, so what we know from our work outside Scouting doesn't always work well in Scouting.

One example of this difference is how we work with and lead volunteers; the most important volunteers being the youth. Wood Badge is leadership development for Scouters and focuses on the knowledge and skills we need to add to what we already know so we can work effectively with volunteers and lead them to achieve our mission of youth development.

Here's a sample of what you can learn at Wood Badge

What comes to mind when you think about the word communication: writing, speaking, email, Twitter?

How about listening? Listening is the key to effective communication; without it communication is just a one-way broadcast.

Consider the graphic below. If the receiver is not really listening then the sender's message won't get through or could be misunderstood. And if the sender is not listening for feedback the sender can't know the message got through and was interpreted as intended relationship in which we can have far more influence than we would by just talking at them.

Empathetic:  understanding and sharing another's feelings.  If you want someone to listen to you, you must first listen to him or her. Get your fellow Scouts' and Scouters' attention by listening, then you are in a good position to educate, inform, or influence.

Effective listening is one of many useful tools you will learn through instruction AND lots of practice during Wood Badge.

If you are interested in learning more so you can contribute more in all aspects of your life- Scouts, work, and home-visit http://training.tidewaterbsa.com/wood-badge-2015/ to learn more.

Training

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader!

If you had a magic wand, would you use it to  make the Scouting program better and more fun for youth so they stayed in Scouting longer, so it had a larger impact on their lives? What if the same magic wand made leadership roles easier, more rewarding, and led to better retention among adult leaders? Would using that magic wand be a top priority?

Well, such a magic wand does exist-in the form of the learning programs for leaders in the Boy Scouts of America.  The Colonial Virginia Council has a policy that all direct contact leaders must be trained in their position. If you still require any training to be considered "Trained" in your position, we encourage you to complete the training as soon as possible.

Common sense tells us training is important, and research shows the importance of trained leaders. A trained leader  is knowledgeable and more confident  in the role being performed. Trained leaders exhibit a knowledge and confidence that is picked  up by people around them. Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. A trained leader is better prepared to make the Scouting program  all it can be!

BALOO

The next BALOO will be held on October 3rd, location to be determined.  A big thank you to Zach Struhs who had over 30 people attend our most recent BALOO in Heritage District.  Great job Zach and many thanks!

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
As you all know, the weather was not good to us or Bayport this spring. We have had to postpone the NYLT course. With our busy Bayport schedule we will have to reschedule NYLT for Oct 30-Nov 1, 2015 and Nov 6-8, 2015. This will mean we will need to restart with a new/revised staff so we will be taking applications of Scouts to be considered for staff. For anyone registered for the March course who cannot make the new date, refunds will be done on a case-by-case basis. Please notify Dennis Camp at bczoo@cox.net.

Training Awards
Your youth work hard to earn advancements and awards AND so do your adult leaders.  Be sure they are recognized appropriately.  Please remember to use the Progress Record Forms with the 2012 requirements for the Adult Leader Training Awards.  The old forms will no longer be accepted.

CPR and Basic First Aid

This course covers adult and child/infant CPR with AED, how to respond in an emergency, and render basic first aid.  This meets and exceeds the requirements for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Level 1 Provider.

Bayport Bash
In a change to the annual schedule, Wahunsenakah Lodge will be holding a weekend event on August 14-16, 2015 at Bayport. The Bayport Bash will be held in place of the Fall Fellowship. This fellowship opportunity will be enhanced by the availability of all of the facilities at Bayport - the pool, the shooting ranges, COPE and climbing, and more! We will be holding the inaugural Bayport Bash Marathon, which will include running, swimming, shooting (rifle, shotgun, archery), climbing, the zip line, and boating events.
