This week the Colonial Virginia Council and Scouting community lost a long-time and dedicated volunteer.  Herb Smith served in a variety of roles, including Council Commissioner.  Herb was an active member of the Order of the Arrow with Wahunsenakah Lodge and SR7A.  Herb was never without his smile, his sense of humor or his camera.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  Details of the arrangements are forthcoming.

The Council Service Center will be closed on Friday, July 3rd.  The Scout Shop will be OPEN on Friday, July 3rd and CLOSED on Saturday, July 4th.

Is Woodbadge for You

If any of these statements describe you, you could benefit from the Wood Badge experience:
  • You have a busy life outside Scouting, and you have plenty do in Scouting
  • You're a leader in your profession. You've attended military or private sector leadership training
  • You're a successful Scout leader; your unit is doing great
  • You work with youth in youth development programs outside Scouting
Surprised?  These statements describe most Scouters in one way or another.

Everyone can benefit from the Wood Badge experience. We can all do better, and we can all know more; that's how we become more. And becoming more is how we contribute more - how we make sure we leave this world a little better than we found it.

What we contribute through our roles in our families, work, and Scouting adds meaning to our lives.

Wood Badge Can Help You Become More and Contribute More in all Aspects of Your Life

Through the Wood Badge experience you will have the opportunity to enjoy more success with less stress.

There are two reasons why Wood Badge will help you contribute more with less stress:

1. Scouting is a profession

2. It's a profession unlike any profession we are involved in outside of Scouting

There's a lot to learn to be successful in Scouting; so much so it's really a profession. There's Boy Scout philosophy, vision, mission, and values, and there's plenty of processes, procedures, policies and methods. Like any other profession you need the knowledge, skills, and experience gained through practice to do well in the Scouting profession.

But the Scouting profession is not like any work you do outside of Scouting. Being an experienced parent or a success in your work outside Scouting is not enough. You need new skills. And much of what you learned outside Scouting must be adapted to work well in Scouting.

Wood Badge is professional development for Scouters designed to help you fill the gap between what you know and can do already and what you need to know and must be able to do in Scouting.

Through the Wood Badge experience you can gain new skills and learn how to adapt what you already know to work well in Scouting.

But how you learn is different; one of the key strengths of Wood Badge is that you learn by doing.  Wood Badge is not like any other training or leadership development. You spend most of your time learning by doing a variety of activities including games (with a purpose, of course), exercises, patrol activities, and troop activities.

Wood Badge is the best professional development deal going; what you can gain from Wood Badge will help you in all aspects of your life.

But Wood Badge is just an opportunity; there's no guarantee you will be a better a Scouter as a result of Wood Badge. What you get out of the experience is entirely up to you.

If you're open to the opportunity and challenge of becoming more than you are now visit http://training.tidewaterbsa.com/wood-badge-2015 to learn more about Wood Badge.

This year the Colonial Trail Day Camp got a special treat that matched its aviation theme, pilot and scouter Dean Gould gave a special fly over to the kids at Nike Park. He snapped this photo on his way by.

In all, 109 Cub Scouts of all program levels attend the camp, which afforded them the opportunity to fish, to learn basic marksmanship and safety with the bow and BB gun, and to begin to apply outdoor ethics in a natural setting.  They also participated in a wide variety of aviation-themed activities, many of which satisfied requirements for their next rank.  A great time was had by all!

Training

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader!

If you had a magic wand, would you use it to  make the Scouting program better and more fun for youth so they stayed in Scouting longer, so it had a larger impact on their lives? What if the same magic wand made leadership roles easier, more rewarding, and led to better retention among adult leaders? Would using that magic wand be a top priority?

Well, such a magic wand does exist-in the form of the learning programs for leaders in the Boy Scouts of America.  The Colonial Virginia Council has a policy that all direct contact leaders must be trained in their position. If you still require any training to be considered "Trained" in your position, we encourage you to complete the training as soon as possible.

Common sense tells us training is important, and research shows the importance of trained leaders. A trained leader  is knowledgeable and more confident  in the role being performed. Trained leaders exhibit a knowledge and confidence that is picked  up by people around them. Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. A trained leader is better prepared to make the Scouting program  all it can be!

BALOO

The next BALOO will be held on October 3rd, location to be determined.  A big thank you to Zach Struhs who had over 30 people attend our most recent BALOO in Heritage District.  Great job Zach and many thanks!

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
As you all know, the weather was not good to us or Bayport this spring. We have had to postpone the NYLT course. With our busy Bayport schedule we will have to reschedule NYLT for Oct 30-Nov 1, 2015 and Nov 6-8, 2015. This will mean we will need to restart with a new/revised staff so we will be taking applications of Scouts to be considered for staff. For anyone registered for the March course who cannot make the new date, refunds will be done on a case-by-case basis. Please notify Dennis Camp at bczoo@cox.net.

Training Awards
Your youth work hard to earn advancements and awards AND so do your adult leaders.  Be sure they are recognized appropriately.  Please remember to use the Progress Record Forms with the 2012 requirements for the Adult Leader Training Awards.  The old forms will no longer be accepted.

CPR and Basic First Aid

This course covers adult and child/infant CPR with AED, how to respond in an emergency, and render basic first aid.  This meets and exceeds the requirements for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Level 1 Provider.
