Woodbadge
In April and June forty-four adult leaders headed to Pipsico for the Wood Badge experience. Over two weekends they learned how to enjoy more success with less stress.
| Meeting a new friend, coarch, or mentor at Wood Badge. |
Participants went through a series of learning sessions and then practiced what they learned in exercises and games designed specifically for adult learners. In fact, the entire course is set up to allow adults to experience life in a Boy Scout troop from the Scouts' perspective. Participants are formed into patrols and function as a patrol throughout the course attending troop meetings, having patrol meetings, experiencing troop skills training, patrol games, and a campout on the second weekend.
Wood Badge participants were busy and challenged throughout the experience; learning and practicing new skills, running their patrols, and planning and participating in troop activities such as a campfire, Scouts's Own service, a service project, and a patrol project.

Along the way participants spent time reflecting on and refining their own vision for their future in Scouting using the counseling and reflection approaches that are the foundation of the BSA approach for working with youth.
John Scheib said this about the course, "Thanks to you and your team for a great Wood Badge weekend. The session on Forming, Norming, Storming, and Performing (and the following up presentation connecting it to EDGE) got me to think harder about the application of the stages of team development at work. So, I decided to teach the basic concepts of that session at work. My boss, who sat in our meeting, was a big fan of this approach. So thanks for providing the spark."
The next Wood Badge experience starts September 25, 2015. Click here for more information.

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader!
If you had a magic wand, would you use it to make the Scouting program better and more fun for youth so they stayed in Scouting longer, so it had a larger impact on their lives? What if the same magic wand made leadership roles easier, more rewarding, and led to better retention among adult leaders? Would using that magic wand be a top priority?
Well, such a magic wand does exist-in the form of the learning programs for leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. The Colonial Virginia Council has a policy that all direct contact leaders must be trained in their position. If you still require any training to be considered "Trained" in your position, we encourage you to complete the training as soon as possible.
Common sense tells us training is important, and research shows the importance of trained leaders. A trained leader is knowledgeable and more confident in the role being performed. Trained leaders exhibit a knowledge and confidence that is picked up by people around them. Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. A trained leader is better prepared to make the Scouting program all it can be!

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
As you all know, the weather was not good to us or Bayport this spring. We have had to postpone the NYLT course. With our busy Bayport schedule we will have to reschedule NYLT for Oct 30-Nov 1, 2015 and Nov 6-8, 2015. This will mean we will need to restart with a new/revised staff so we will be taking applications of Scouts to be considered for staff. For anyone registered for the March course who cannot make the new date, refunds will be done on a case-by-case basis. Please notify Dennis Camp at bczoo@cox.net.
Your youth work hard to earn advancements and awards AND so do your adult leaders. Be sure they are recognized appropriately. Please remember to use the Progress Record Forms with the 2012 requirements for the Adult Leader Training Awards. The old forms will no longer be accepted.
CPR and Basic First Aid
