Friends of Scouting is the Colonial Virginia Council's annual giving campaign and is the largest and most important source of funding. Your support enables Scouting's programs and outdoor adventures to prepare young people for a lifetime of character and leadership.

Family Friends of Scouting Patches
The Colonial Virginia Council, Boy Scouts of America has a limited number of patches from the 15 patch set - "12 Points of the Scout Law" to rerelease. Each individual patch is available for a $75 donation and a limited number of 6 full sets are available for a donation of $1,000 (includes 15 patches). You may shop our online storefront and pay online or contact Amanda Wroten at 757-595-3356, ext. 209 to pay via cash, check, or credit card over the phone. We ask that all donations be above and beyond your current Friends of Scouting gift.
Volunteer Needed in the Scout Shop
The Colonial Virginia Council is in need of a volunteer to help with back office items and inventory in the Scout Shop. Interested parties can contact Scott Rehrauer at 757-595-3356, ext. 204.
Camp Cards
Just a reminder - May 30th is the date for units to turn in their camp card materials/money without penalty.
The Scout Strong Challenge is underway again! Back by popular demand, we will hold a spring and a fall edition - annually. Walk, run, swim or get moving in your own unique way. This virtual distance race covers 1 mile to 50 miles! Your choice. Open to Scouts, Scouters, and the general public. You will be rewarded with a custom medal - different for each season we hold the event.
Medals from the 2014 Scout Strong Challenge are in the Scout Shop available for pickup!
Order of the Arrow Beaver Days
All Scouts and Scouters of the CVC! Bayport needs your help in preparing for the summer camp season! Come up and help us with preparing campsites, painting, plumbing, automotive work, and landscaping our roads and program areas. The event is sponsored by the Order of the Arrow and
lunch is provided. Please RSVP by calling Ranger Joe at 804-695-6882 and let him know what your team can assist with and how many hungry volunteers you are bringing so he can tell our lunch chef!
Order of the Arrow Spring Service Weekend Attendees
This is our last big push to get Bayport ready for Summer Camp. The lodge is in need of trailers and drivers to move brush, tents and cots as part of our planned service projects. If you have a special skill (carpentry, automotive, plumbing etc) please call Ranger Joe (804-695-6882) prior to the event to be assigned a specific project(s).

Chesapeake Bay District Cub Scout Roundtable
Had a grand time at roundtable this month with the Champs! Next month we will have a joint session with the Boy Scout Roundtable and it is all about Recruitment and Retention. So please bring a dish to share and as many leaders as you can. We will give you fun ways and great ideas to recruit and retain for 2015/2016.
Come join us on June 4, 2015 for the last Cub/Boy Scout Roundtable.
We will take a break until September 3. 2015.

Cubmasters and Committee: Getting Ready for 2015. We will have a sample ceremony and a game and cheer you can use in your den or pack meeting. A few snacks are waiting for you plus 3 door prizes.

District Merger and Name the District Contest
The Colonial Virginia Council, along with the leadership of the Heritage and James River District, has made the decision to merge the two districts. This merger will increase efficiency and the effectiveness of BSA services to our area youth. The merger will enhance service delivery to the units, e.g., even better programs, training, and other Scouting activities.
We would like to run a contest to "Name The District." The contest will run from March 1 through June 1, 2015. Submissions can be made by anyone from either district.

Made for More Youth Summit
Date: Thursday, May 28th
Time: 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Location: Warwick High School
The Made for More Youth Summit will be a local action meeting and call to
action for the Hampton Roads Community to advance the well-being of young men of color as challenged by President Barack Obama's My Brother's Keeper Initiative.

Upcoming Events for Catholic Scouts
Annual Scout tour of the Diocese of Richmond Cathedral and Ordination Mass is Saturday, June 6, 2015 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. All scouts and adults are invited to take a tour of the beautiful Cathedral and following the tour is the Ordination Mass where three Transitional Deacons will be ordained into the priesthood. Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader!
If you had a magic wand, would you use it to make the Scouting program better and more fun for youth so they stayed in Scouting longer, so it had a larger impact on their lives? What if the same magic wand made leadership roles easier, more rewarding, and led to better retention among adult leaders? Would using that magic wand be a top priority?
Well, such a magic wand does exist-in the form of the learning programs for leaders in the Boy Scouts of America. The Colonial Virginia Council has a policy that all direct contact leaders must be trained in their position. If you still require any training to be considered "Trained" in your position, we encourage you to complete the training as soon as possible.
Common sense tells us training is important, and research shows the importance of trained leaders. A trained leader is knowledgeable and more confident in the role being performed. Trained leaders exhibit a knowledge and confidence that is picked up by people around them. Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a whole lot more. A trained leader is better prepared to make the Scouting program all it can be!

The person who can facilitate the outdoor ethics activity in Cub Scout Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award requirement No. 4 is any person who is any of the following:
- a Leave No Trace Master Educator or Trainer
- a Tread Lightly! Master Tread Trainer or Tread Trainer
- a person who has completed either the BSA outdoor ethics orientation course (in beta testing) or the BSA Leave No Trace 101 course (Training Fair)
- any person who has earned the BSA Leave No Trace Awareness Card (Training Fair)
- any individual designated by a council outdoor ethics advocate or, in the absence of an advocate, the Scout executive or his or her designee, to facilitate the "outdoor ethics activity.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
As you all know, the weather was not good to us or Bayport this spring. We have had to postpone the NYLT course. With our busy Bayport schedule we will have to reschedule NYLT for Oct 30-Nov 1, 2015 and Nov 6-8, 2015. This will mean we will need to restart with a new/revised staff so we will be taking applications of Scouts to be considered for staff. For anyone registered for the March course who cannot make the new date, refunds will be done on a case-by-case basis. Please notify Dennis Camp at bczoo@cox.net.

Training Awards
Your youth work hard to earn advancements and awards AND so do your adult leaders. Be sure they are recognized appropriately. Please remember to use the Progress Record Forms with the 2012 requirements for the Adult Leader Training Awards. The old forms will no longer be accepted.
CPR and Basic First Aid
This course covers adult and child/infant CPR with AED, how to respond in an emergency, and render basic first aid. This meets and exceeds the requirements for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts Level 1 Provider.
