Den Chief Training!

The Den Chief is a critical member of the Cub Scout leadership team. To be successful, he must realize how important his job really is. Den Chief Training is intended to build enthusiasm for the job, develop high morale, and teach the skills he will need to be successful.

Presented in a single half-day session, this training combines fun and enjoyment with an excellent character building experience. Participants will learn leadership, organization and, most importantly, how to work with Cub Scouts.

This training is also for adult leaders (packs and troops) who want to learn the duties of a Den Chief.

This month, Den Chief Training will be held on October 18th in Suffolk.  The cost is just $5.00 and the program runs 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.  Click here to view the registration form.

Participants are asked to donate $20.00 in exchange for three swings at the vehicle.  Safety goggles and a hard hat are provided.  The vehicle will be available Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. each day, until October 25th.

Monday - Saturday
September 17th - October 25th
11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Training

Council-wide Youth Protection Training Initiative

Recently at the August meeting, the Colonial Virginia Council Executive Committee approved a resolution to improve the percentage of registered leaders that are current in Youth Protection Training.

National Boy Scouts of America policy states that Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers. In addition, national policy states that Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer does not meet the BSA's Youth Protection training requirement at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

Registered volunteers include ALL adult volunteers in Scouting with the exception of Tiger Cub Adult Partners and Unit Executive Officer (Institutional Head). For full information on Youth Protection in the Boy Scouts of America, please click here.

In the resolution approved by the Council Executive Committee, registered volunteers will be required to take Youth Protection Training EVERY CALENDAR YEAR.

Effective October 1, 2014, at the time an adult submits an application to be a registered adult volunteer, they are required to include a copy of their Youth Protection Training Certificate that has the current year as the year the training was taken. For example, if an application is submitted in October 2014, the training certificate must indicate that the training was completed in 2014. This applies to all NEW, TRANSFER & MULTIPLE adult leader applications submitted.

Effective this upcoming unit rechartering cycle in December 2014, for every registered adult volunteer included on the unit recharter paperwork, there must be included in the submission, a training certificate for every registered volunteer that covers the entire calendar year of 2015. All training certificates must have either 2014 or 2015 as the training completion date.

Advancement and Registration

Every unit should be encouraging their scouts and leaders to earn the religious emblem of their faith.  Not only can they wear the medal earned, but they can wear a knot as well.  When submitting an advancement report include both the religious knot with the full date earned and the specific award name as well.  e.g. God and County, God and Life, Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei - just to name a few.  Both awards can be entered in the scouts'/leaders' records.

It is GREAT when your scouts and leaders earn the 50-Miler Award!  A Scout is Physically Strong.   When you submit the application 50-Miler Award Application please include an advancement report with the scouts' and leaders' names attached to it with the full date earned, so we know and can record who earned it.  Hopefully National will update this form soon: but for now, an advancement report listing the awardees is needed.

Please turn in ALL pages of your Internet Advancement Report.  When the report is reviewed at council, it must have the totals awards reported/summary page that is printed at the end of the report. Otherwise, it is questionable that we received all the pages of the report.
