James River Association

The James River is an incredible resource for the Council and Virginians.  May Scouts have had their first overnight canoe trip along its banks, an experience they will remember forever.  Last year, the Boy Scouts partnered with the James River Association in an effort to remove old tires from the James River between Lynchburg and Richmond. They took part in a massive one-day cleanup that removed over 500 tires from the river. It was a great way for Scouts to feel a sense of stewardship of our natural resources.

The James River Association wants to expand this effort to the entire 340-mile length of the James River in 2014. They are calling the service project The Tire-less James and it will take place on Saturday, September 13, 2014.

Units can register online to cover a stretch of the river at this link:  http://jrava.org/get-involved/volunteer/tire-less-james

Potential Eagle Scout Project

Advancement and Registration

As soon as a youth joins your unit they MUST be registered to participate, work on advancements, earn awards, and to be recognized.

Use scout's complete legal name. This is important for insurance purposes, as well as an accurate and complete scout record. An application and an advancement record are required from scouts that joins your unit from another council. BE SURE the appropriate boxes are checked for transfers including the BSA ID#. e.g. for those bridging cubs, scouts moving from unit to unit in our council.  www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-406a.pdf  (instructions: If applicant has an unexpired membership certificate, registration may be accomplished at no charge by transferring the registration. Mark and attach a copy of the certificate.)

Please allow at least two to three weeks for the application to be processed before you attempt to enter on-line advancements. Nothing can be entered until he/she appears on your roster. Accurate records are imperative for our mobile society.

Scout Shop Orders
Thank you to our dedicated volunteers, parents, and guardians who help make Scouting possible for thousands of youth throughout our area.  Our council is working hard to restock our store and provide custom orders for all your Scouting needs.  We are grateful for your patronage and support.  Each week we will list our next order date in our newsletter so that you can plan your needed program supplies, uniforms, and other Scouting related purchases. At this time we are not able to pre-order advancement items.  Examples of advancement items include:
  • Belt loops
  • Recognition pins
  • Rank badges
  • Merit badges
We are happy to custom order other items you need to purchase.  Orders simply need to be paid in advance and they will be included in next order placed through our store, on a weekly basis.  Once items arrive in our store our Scout Shop Manager will call you to arrange a pickup time.  Thank you for your support of our store. Please feel free to call the Scout Shop at 757-595-3356, ext. 223 or email Kendra.natson@scouting.org to verify if items you need are in stock.  This may save you a trip.
