LEESVILLE, La.-- Leesville City Councilwoman Willie Mae Kennedy recently joined forces with her fellow Jubilee Park Committee members and gave away hundreds of dollars in school supplies to local school children and two $250 scholarships to Leesville High School students Dadirenne Williams and Kameron Nabors this month.
The Jubilee Park Committee works to improve the park and make it welcoming to residents of the area. The Jubilee Park is located on Nona Street, across from Vernon Middle School.
There were sixteen members of the committee in attendance to welcome, serve and encourage roughly 240 children and 100 adults at the annual Back to School Supply Giveaway on Saturday, August 13, 2015 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. Members of the committee in attendance were Lue Kennedy, Cassandra Wilson, Thomas Martin, Rickie Johnson, Councilwoman Kennedy, Regina Wells, Ramona Bonner, Deborah Edwards, Parthenia Douglas-Beal, Sonny Harrell, Thomas Martin, Lydia LaSane, Luella Gordon, Eugene Hamilton, Jackie Shaw, and Robert Waller.
"Without the support and donations from our resources and volunteers, the event would not have been a success," said Councilwoman Kennedy.
Sponsors included: the Leesville Wal-Mart; Central Texas College; The Leesville Coalition; Addictive Disorder Clinic of Pineville, LA; Vernon Ministerial Association; Jesus Christ House of Prayer; American Legion Post #387 New Llano; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority; Mr. Clarence Kennedy; Mr. William Gonzalez; Mr. Jay Smith; and Mr. Joe Blake.
The committee also gave away a $250 scholarship each to two Leesville High School students.
According to Wilson, who is also principal at Vernon Middle School, the group seeks "to serve our community, especially our young people" with the ultimate goal of broadening students' horizons and investing in the community.
This was the first year of what the committee hopes will be many that they can provide scholarships to local students, said Kennedy.
Williams plans to attend University of Louisiana at Monroe in the fall, while Nabors will be attending University of Cincinnati.
