LEESVILLE, La.-- The Martin Luther King Jr. Center concluded its annual Go for the Gold Summer Enrichment Program Thursday, July 23, 2015.
The program ran from June 15 - July 23 with 45-50 kids in attendance each day. Focusing on physical fitness and life skills classes, the students worked hard daily to promote healthy and positive living.
The children would arrive and have their breakfast at the center. After a short break they would file in for a physical fitness class. The kids could relax after all that exercise by creating arts and crafts projects and attending classes on developing life skills. After class, They enjoyed lunch before being released to go home around 12:30 each day with their parents.
Mr. Leroy Stokes, the MLK Center manager, stressed the importance of programs such as this for disadvantaged youth.
"Each year the center strives to help kids develop healthy habits and positive life styles," he said.
The Go for the Gold Enrichment Program is fully funded by the City of Leesville, and costs roughly $4,000 each year. The City expresses its gratitude to the MLK Center employees, Stokes and Sonny Harrell as well as volunteer Sheila Horton for all their efforts to help the children of Leesville.
