The Fort Polk Army Substance Abuse Program is working with the City of Leesville to support, educate, and establish a more healthy, drug-free lifestyle in the community. The parade will kick off National Red Ribbon Week, October 23 - 31.
Slots are still available for local businesses, churches, organizations, schools, and youth groups to sign up, design, and showcase their floats in the parade. Float registration is free and will remain open until October 15. Participants are asked to design their floats to show support for a drug-free lifestyle.
Individuals are invited to take part in the festivities as well. Following the parade, individuals, families, and groups are invited to sport their red shirts and walk the parade route to pledge their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
"Red Ribbon Week is an established campaign held each year across the country. Our goal is to bring more awareness locally to this issue that affects all people; regardless of location, age, or race," said Dena Perkins, case manager for the Army Substance Abuse Program. "So many families are affected by drug and alcohol addiction, and many people don't even know about it. Family, friends, and community participation let individuals know they are not alone in their battles. The event is an interactive compliment for what our children learn in school about healthy, drug-free lifestyles."
