LEESVILLE, LA.-Walk through the doors of the Martin Luther King Community Center on North Gladys Street and you'll be greeted with smiling faces, the excited chatter of kids and an extensive learning environment.
The Community Center houses the Vernon Parish Library Dunbar Branch, a computer lab made possible by computers donated by Central Texas College, a well-equipped playground, game room, kitchen, and two outdoor college rule basketball courts that are covered and fenced in for safety.
The best part is it's all free.
"The Vernon Parish Library Dunbar Branch has proven to be a great asset to our educational programs offered at the center, particularly the K-6 After School Homework Assistance Program," said Facility Director Leroy Stokes.
But the after-school homework program is only one program focused on enriching the community. Currently the 1st-6th grade "Go for the Gold" Summer Enrichment and Recreation Program is underway along with mentoring and life skills programs that are continued through the year.
Free piano lessons are also being offered, and organizations also utilize the facilities for events such as vacation Bible schools.
The center can even be rented for a private gathering at reasonable rates: $100 for six hours or less or $150 for more than six hours.
"We often see family reunions and wedding receptions held at the center with the kitchen and outside play facilities being a great option for events," says Stokes.
