Summer Theatre Camp Preparing for Broadway Presentation

LEESVILLE--The 2014 Leesville Summer Theatre presentation is in full swing, and students across Vernon Parish are preparing for a night of free, fun, family-friendly entertainment with "A Night on Broadway."

The event, part of Leesville's "Summer Theatre Intensive 2014" camp, is hosted by Taylor Smith, Northwestern State University student. During the three week camp, Smith is teaching students of Vernon Parish basic theatrical skills.

"We are excited to have a college student host this year's camp. Taylor has a lot of energy and does a great job of encouraging students. He is closer in age with the high school students, and they are able to see what potential there is for someone who chooses to pursue fine arts," said Sam Kincade, Leesville Main Street manager. "Elementary and high schools across the country are seeing a rapid decline in the support and participation of these extracurricular activities. Presentations like 'A Night on Broadway' provide students who are interested in theatre, dance, singing, and acting the opportunity to excel in fine arts."

The three-week camp began June 2. The culminating event will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 20 and will include hit songs from popular Broadway hits such as "Wicked," "Chicago," and "Shrek." The performance will take place at the Polk Outdoor Theatre at 107 East Texas Street in Leesville.

NSU student Taylor Smith leads Vernon Parish students in a rehearsal of a "A Night on Broadway." The show is set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 20 at the Polk Outdoor Theatre.
