Gumbo Cook-off
First up is the annual Dicky Berry Gumbo Cook-off beginning at 7 a.m. at S. 3rd Street and E. Lee Street in downtown Leesville.
Cooks can enter one of three categories as individuals or teams for $30 each and a chance to win $1,000 for first place or $100 for second place in each category.
Organizations and businesses are allowed to enter. The categories are chicken and pork, seafood and wild game. Entries will be accepted no later than February 26, 2014.
Judging will commence at 11:30 a.m., with three judges scoring each gumbo on appearance, aroma, consistency, texture and flavor. Tasting begins immediately following the judging. Tickets for tasting are $7, with beer and soda available for purchase.

Mumbo Gumbo Mardi Gras 5K
Also set for March 1 is the second annual Mumbo Gumbo Mardi Gras 5K at 9 a.m., at Oak Pointe Wellness Center 800 1/2 South Third St Leesville, LA 71446.
The 5K is hosted by Team RWB (www.teamrwb.org), an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of veterans by connecting them to their communities through physical and social activity.
