Greetings from Capital Hill in Washington DC!
Home Healthsmith was honored to be the guests of Meredith Sheehan, Manager of Programs & Advocacy, of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Rhode Island Chapter.
The National MS Society hosts an annual Public Policy Conference in DC every March. We were advocating for NIH Funding, FDA Funding, CDMRP and the Durable Medical Coverage Expansion under Medicare. We spent Tuesday listening to representatives and activists regarding the issues and were prepped to go out and advocate for additional funding.
We had the pleasure of meeting with Jack Reed, United States Senator for RI and Marc Capuano, Correspondence Director for Senator Reed; Rick Van Buren, Legislative Assistant for Senator Sheldon Whitehouse; Matthew McGinn, Legislative Correspondent for Congressional David Cicilline and Todd Adams, Legislative Director for the Honorable Jim Langevin, member of Congress for the 2nd District of Rhode Island.
We were able to talk to these legislators about our personal story on how MS has affected our lives and the lives of our families and about what Home Healthsmith is doing to enable those that are disabled to live safely in their homes. We talked about some of the issues that our clients are facing regarding funding needed to make the modifications necessary to keep them in their homes. We explained that some of our clients need stairlifts to allow them to get to their bathroom on the 2nd floor and that some need their doors widened to enable them to move around in their wheelchairs.
Every day we move closer to a world free of MS. Join the movement to help raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis. Learn more by contacting the Rhode Island Chapter at 1-800-FIGHTMS or go to www.nationalmssociety.org.
Special thanks to our host, Meredith Sheehan and the local RI Chapter.
