Welcome to the 2016/2017 school year! Already this year has started off strong with a buzz of excitement at both campuses. This year we have a few new staff members as well as a number of new families who have joined us on our journey. A special welcome to those families with the smallest Urban Academy students who have made it through the first few weeks with newly minted school aged children.

As the work begins in the classroom, the work continues in the design of the new school building. I'm happy with the progress of the development team as well as the city to ensure that we keep to our timelines to open the new facility in the fall of 2018.

Along with the breaking of the ground at 100 Braid Street, this year will bring with it many wonderful opportunities for students and families. The Winter Concert is already being planned, the inquiry units rolled out, sports teams and clubs selected and many opportunities for students to link their learning to initiatives outside the classroom.

This is the time of year that we also ask families to spend some time talking about expectations, setting routines and focusing on annual goals with their children. From uniforms and homework to planners and bedtimes, all of these things set children up for success in the classroom. We are consistently encouraged by the home and school connections already made, that will help students thrive.

Thank you once again for entrusting us with your children. We are very much looking forward to working together for a wonderful year of learning!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
Introducing Our New Teachers
This year we have another bunch of fine new teachers to introduce. Some of you may have already seen them around the corridors of both campuses. Joining the cohort at our Robson campus will be Ms. Danielle Fera and Ms. Lindsey McEwen teaching Kindergarten and Grade 1, respectively. At Uptown, Ms. Marianne Brownie has come on board as our new Grade 4 teacher.

Ms. Fera has been teaching a variety of grades for the last 4 years spanning from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 4. Passionate about developing life-long learners, Ms. Fera believes in experiential learning in her classroom.

Ms. McEwen has taught in both public and private schools, from JK to Grade 7. Her experience also includes two years teaching in London, England. She strives to create a supportive, caring classroom environment for her students.

Mrs. Brownie has been teaching at the intermediate grade levels for the past several years, as well as teaching English Language Arts at the high school level. She is a great believer in inquiry-based learning, and encourages her students to be creative, open-minded and inquisitive.
PAX - Getting To Know Ya!
Urban Academy is fortunate to have a strong and vibrant parent community leading the fundraising charge with PAX. Take a few minutes to learn a little bit about what it is, who they are and what they do.

Who Leads it? Suzette Willems and Molly Rabinovitz are the PAX co-chairs

How long have you been at UA?
SW: Our family is starting our fourth year at the school.
MR: This is our second year at UA, we started in JK.

What inspired you to get involved with PAX?
SW: I've had the privilege of being a member of PAX for over three years. I knew about the uniform sale but I wanted to get a better understanding of the various facets of PAX and how they serve the school so PAX was the logical choice for me.
MR: First, I got involved in PAX activities, somewhat unknowingly because they were activities I was interested in - Hot Lunch, Uniform Sale - and then I got to know some of the PAX members and was asked if I would like to join. I'm glad I did!

What have you planned for PAX this year? We are bringing back many of the favorites - parent Halloween party, hot lunch, uniform sales, pies and cookies. We have a couple of new ideas up our sleeves so stay tuned!

Any advice for other parents looking to get more involved this year?
Find activities that strike a chord - field trips, hot lunch, administrative assistance, maintenance. Speak with other parents and learn about what volunteer opportunities the school has to offer. UA needs volunteers interested in all realms of school activities, up front and behind the scenes. Try new things, too. Maybe parties aren't your things, but the Run for Water, Terry Fox Run, or other fundraising activities might be! Keep an eye on SignUp, there is something out there for everyone.

SignUp.com
We use an app called Signup.com (formerly known as VolunteerSpot) to help parents track their volunteer hours and have easy access to all the volunteer opportunities.

If you are new to the school please visit Signup.com to register and download the "Signup by VolunteerSpot" app (for a nominal fee). Once signed in, you will be able to access current UA volunteer opportunities.

If you used the VolunteerSpot app last year, you are already set up and nothing new is required.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please email Joanne Ward, UA Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@urbanacademy.ca.  If you'd like to volunteer with PAX specifically please email the Co-Chairs at pax@urbanacademy.ca.
