Greetings!

Antoine de Saint-Exupry said, "A goal without a plan is just a wish."

As registration approaches I hope you will take the time to think about your goals, and the plans that will help you achieve them.

Do you want to travel? Read about two short-term opportunities in the Going Global section below - you could find yourself in New York City or Central America before the academic year is over.

Are you worried you're not prepared for registration? Read the Advising Center News for advice and information about talking with your advisor and filling out all the necessary paperwork before your registration window opens.

And don't forget to mark your calendars for the Upcoming Events!  I hope you plan to attend the College of Business Family Weekend reception this Saturday.

Best wishes as you finish up midterms and take on the second half of the semester!

Advising Center News
Seriously, they know what they're talking about.

In order to better answer registration questions, advisors in the College of Business Advising Center (MH 151) will see students on a walk-in basis to answer your registration questions. Students will sign in and see the first available advisor. Please come 1-3 days prior to your registration window opening.

Students with 60 or more credits should come see an advisor November 12-20.

Students with 59 or less credits should come see an advisor November 21-December 4.

To prepare for registration and meetings with advisors, we encourage you to follow these simple tips.

  • Look up your registration window under "courses & registration" on e-Services and register as soon as your window opens.
  • Check for any registration holds under "courses & registration" on e-Services and take care of holds before your window opens. Holds will prevent you from registering.

  • Review your Interactive Degree Audit Report (DARS) to see which courses you have completed and which courses in general education and your major you still need to complete. This can be found on e-Services under "check grades."
  • Review the class schedule and develop a list of classes you are interested in taking in the spring. Bring this list of classes and your DARS report with you when you meet with your advisor.
  • Meet with your advisor 1-3 days prior to your registration window opening.
  • After meeting with your advisor, review the class schedule and put courses in your cart.
  • Register as soon as your registration window opens.

Laptop Program and Prerequisite Override Forms:

Students beginning to take 200 level or above classes in the College of Business will need to complete the Laptop form 1-2 days prior to registering.

Students who transferred in a course that are prerequisite for a course they wish to register will need to complete a Prerequisite Override from 1-2 days prior to registration.

Forms can be found here.

Hometown: Rochester, Minnesota

Roommates:

My wife Judy and a Shih Tzu named Kylie

What are your guilty pleasures:

Can I say sleep? I actually enjoy playing golf, though I'm not very good at it.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?   Astronaut

What was your major in undergrad?

I was a double major in Economics and History. History was easy and fun. Economics was what I was going to do something with.

Desert Island Categories:

(If you were stranded on a deserted island, and you could pick one item for each category to have with you, what would you choose?)

-          Book: Guide to Surviving on a Deserted Island

-          Movie: Dr. No

-          TV Series: Top Chef

-          Album: Top Hits of the '80s

-          Food item: Steak

Why did you decide to pursue teaching?

I thought it was an interesting discipline. I liked the fact that I could help people. As an undergraduate I would often help people in the various classes I was in, so it was a natural transition.

What has been your favorite teaching moment?

I have multiple favorite teaching moments. Seeing the students graduate is really a high point. I enjoy going to the ceremonies, seeing them walk, and celebrating the fact that they all survived and presumably learned a great deal. It's also quite interesting when they come back, seeing how they have gone forward, worked, and developed their own careers.

Favorite Quote:

I have multiple favorite quotes. You can usually find them on my syllabi. Here are several-

"If money is the root of all evil, what is the root of all money?"

"Learning is not compulsory. It is survival."

"Bulls make money. Bears make money. Pigs get slaughtered."
