Brenda
Greetings!

Welcome to our first fall issue of the Student eNews - with a brand new format! The eNews-letter comes out twice a month and is full of important information for you.

Regular features include a faculty profile, upcoming events in the College, news and advice from the Advising Center, and links to our social media pages. Other information that will show up in the eNews includes scholarship details and deadlines, student worker profiles, and technology advice from our student tech-team. But the most important thing we can include in our newsletter requires your help! We want stories and photos from and about you! Let us know what great things you're up to in your business classes and around campus. Tell us about your club activities, your internships, or your volunteer work.

I hope you'll use this newsletter to stay connected with the College, and to stay informed about the opportunities and resources available to you. Best wishes for the rest of the semester!

Seriously, they know what they're talking about.

For some of you, this is a welcome back and for some it is a welcome to MSU.  We hope your semester is off to a good start!  We know that it is your goal to have a great semester and to support you in reaching that goal, we offer the following tips.

  1. Be an active learner.  This means go to class prepared (with the reading done), pay attention, ask questions and take notes.
  2. Plan.  By this time you have gone to each class and received your syllabi.  Have you taken the time to write down all your assignments, papers, projects and tests in your planner?  If not, think about doing this now so that you know what you have coming up and can plan your time appropriately to meet the deadlines and be prepared for tests.
  3. Use your time wisely.  When classes do not meet every day, you have more time on your hands and it can be easy to procrastinate.  You should be able to find time every day, 7 days a week, to do some studying.  Stay on top of your reading.   Don't wait until the night before to write that paper.  Stay organized.  Remember that, ultimately, you are responsible for your education.
  4. Play.  All work and no play does not make for a well-rounded student.  Get involved, work-out, and hang-out with friends.  The key is to find balance in your work time (class and studying) and your play time.
  5. Sleep.  It can be easy to want to stay up so you don't miss out on some fun.  However, sleep is important to help you stay healthy and alert in class and when you study.  Make sure you get enough.
  6. Ask for help There are a lot of really smart and talented people at Minnesota State.  However, no of us can read your mind.  You need to be your own advocate.  Ask questions and ask for help.   There are many services and resources on campus to help you be successful.  We are here to help you achieve your goals.
  7. Believe in yourself.   We all have days when we feel down or question choices we made and that is normal.   Stay positive--we know you can do it!

Why did you decide to pursue teaching?

I worked for Kraft Foods for fourteen years before I got into academics. There were some opportunities over here and I actually came and inquired about it, because there was a part of me that always thought it would be interesting to teach in college. I was certified to teach 7th to 12th, but not anything past that. I had an MBA at the time and they needed some help, so I interviewed and ended up getting the job. I liked it so well that I went and pursued my PhD, and now the rest is history.

What has been your favorite teaching moment?

There are many, but one sticks out. I had an HR student several years ago come up to me when she was graduating and gave me a little token with a saying on it. When she gave it to me she said, "This is really small. I'm giving you this little token of my appreciation for all you've done for me, but you gave me a lifetime of knowledge and advice. This token is all I'm giving to you, but please accept it with my sincere gratitude." It was a really special moment.
