The Internship Timeline
Why staying on track is essential to your success!

Finding a high quality internship with an employer that engages your career interests is not an impossible goal to achieve; it just takes planning ahead!  The first step to getting organized is to meet with your academic advisor ASAP and determine exactly when you will do your for-credit internship.
Once you have a semester in mind, work backwards a semester or two in advance -- this is when you should be researching opportunities in your field, surveying different organizations, and conducting informational interviews with current professionals.  The knowledge you will gain from the research process will help you determine exactly what types of transferable skills and knowledge you'll want to highlight in your resume and communicate to employers in your cover letter -- just the simple fact that you have the ability to tailor your professional documents towards a particular industry will greatly increase your chances of standing out among a crowd of applicants!  The semester before you plan to do your internship is when you should begin applying to opportunities with your tailored documents, as many competitive employers have early deadlines.  Don't forget to schedule a practice interview with a Career Coach early in the semester to ensure your interviewing skills are up to par to get you the job.  With all this planning ahead, by the time the end of the semester comes around you won't be overwhelmed with the stress of studying for finals and finding an internship last minute -- Nope, you'll be calm and relaxed, knowing the next semester is going to provide you with a great learning experience from a quality employer and give you greater direction with your career!
