Making Training Stick
Part I:  Designing for Transfer
Training and OD professionals often talk about the importance of conducting engaging training; more and more, we debate ways to keep the technology generation entertained while learning.  But wait a minute.  What happens in the training classroom isn't really the point, is it?  What really matters is whether content "transfers" -- that is, it is learned and assimilated fully enough that it can be implemented back on the job.

The literature on adult learning is consistent:  adults learn best and transfer that knowledge most effectively when they are actively engaged in learning, when learning is relevant to their jobs, and when the facilitator taps into their life and work experience.
In addition, if people are to attain SKILLS (not merely knowledge), then they need opportunities to practice and get feedback in a safe setting.

With all these criteria in mind, we are strong advocates of a
case study approach to training.  Setting up a series of scenarios where participants can test their knowledge and even try their skills at resolving workplace issues will not only keep them interested, but it will enable the facilitator to gauge how well they have learned the material -- and how ready they are to apply it back on the job. Of course you can create your own scenarios,or check out our cards on various topics; they are designed exactly for this purpose with scenarios that are relevant across industries and address a variety of challenging workplace issues.

In our next newsletter, we'll talk about the powerful role trainees' managers play in the transfer equation, and what you can do to maximize their impact.

For more information or suggestions about how to conduct training that sticks, email us.  We'd love to continue the conversation!
CaseCards News
Human Resources Conference
We have just returned from a pirate-themed state conference of Human Resources professionals. The NC-SHRM 2014 Conference was exhilarating, thought-provoking, and tons of FUN!  Our (pirate) hats are off to the Greenville SHRM chapter and the program team for putting on a great conference!

We were happy to speak to nearly 100 people in our two sessions -- "Unleashing the Hidden Power of Social Networks in Organizations" and "Avoid Mutiny: Engaging Leaders in HR Training".  We were also glad to meet many new people at our booth in the exhibit hall.

Stay tuned to find out where our ship is sailing next!
