FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Last Friday we welcomed grandparents and special friends to our school. The day provided an opportunity for the students to show their appreciation for those dear to them with special chapel presentations and activities throughout the morning.

We appreciate the many ways in which our grandparents and special friends enrich our school, many on a daily basis working in the lunchroom, garden, on field trips, service learning, and in the library and classrooms. We are blessed with the gifts of time, talent and treasure that grandparents and special friends give to St. Michael's School, and appreciate all that they do for the children and faculty.

Many thanks to Chris Dariotis, Anamarie Franc, Liza Micheli and their committee members who ensured that everyone was welcomed with warm hospitality, delicious refreshments, music and gifts. Well done one and all!

OPEN HOUSE AND PRESCHOOL ART SHOW

The children and faculty have been working very hard in preparing to share the accomplishments of the school year at Open House.  The displays and artwork are spectacular, and we hope you will all  join us tomorrow, Thursday, May 23rd.  I applaud everyone's efforts.

Following the classroom visits ALL are invited to enjoy food and beverages in the Courtyard.

IMPORTANT CALENDAR DATES FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

To help parents plan family vacations and outings, the dates for next year's school vacations and teacher workdays are attached to this Wednesday Letter.

TRAFFIC TIME PROCEDURES

Priorities:

1.  Safety and security of our students is our top priority (be aware of any "strange" people - tell a staff duty person if you are concerned)

2.  Otherwise, please don't talk to staff duty persons -- they're "on duty" protecting your children

3.  Waiting to cross at the crosswalks is essential for traffic flow (this is different than downtown), so we don't block Mission Avenue

Procedures:

1. It is a Traffic Circle. Please drive around the circle no matter what time it is.

2. ALWAYS drive as far toward the Lunch Room entrance as you can -- no matter what time it is -- nothing backs up traffic on to Mission Avenue faster than stopping short in the Traffic Circle!

3. If you have to get out of the car to unload students or backpacks, especially from the trunk/tailgate, please PARK

4. ALWAYS cross at the Crosswalks/do NOT cross anywhere else

5. NEVER park in the drop off lanes during traffic time; not even for "two minutes while I run into the Office" (at other times, be careful of red paint on the curb -- it's a hefty fine to park in a "Fire Lane")

6. Follow the directions of the staff duty persons as much as possible.

Box Tops Collection
Our final box tops collection drive started on Monday and continues until next Wednesday, May 29.  Please bring all of your box tops to school and help earn money for our library.  The winning class will receive the spirit stick and a special treat!  Please see the attached flyer.

Spring  Concert

St. Michael's "Spring Concert" in the iMAST building is rapidly approaching! Please mark your calendars for Thursday, May 30th at 6:30 pm. Children in Kindergarten through 7th grade arrive for tuning and placement by 6:15pm and music begins at 6:30pm. Each class will be featured playing a selection of songs on their instruments.

If you would like to volunteer to help with refreshments for this evening, please let Kenna Shelton know as soon as possible at kennashelton@smeds.net.

Yo-Yo Yogurt Fundraiser

Please support our student council Yo-Yo Yogurt Fundraiser on Friday, May 31st.  St. Michael's will receive 25% of the entire day's sales (from 11:00am - 11:00pm).  The proceeds will be donated to a St. Michael's alumna who was badly injured, along with her husband, in Boston.  Please see attached flyer for details.

Summer Reading Book Swap - June 3 - 5
As we all get ready for a wonderful summer break, it's time to also start thinking about summer reading!  You may  have some great books at home that your child has read, has loved, and would like to trade for something else.  Here's your chance!

St. Michael's Library will be hosting the first annual Summer Reading Book Swap during the last week of school.  So now is the time to start looking through your child's books at home, and choosing some good books to trade.  Books should be brought to the library beginning Monday, May 27.  For each book that your child brings, he/she may swap for another during the Book Swap.  The Swap will be held June 3rd-5th. What a great way to get ready to keep reading great books during the summer break!

Barnes and Noble Book Fair - June 7 - 9

St. Michael's is partnering with Barnes and Noble bookstore to feature a Book Fair beginning on Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9 at the Arden store. Books that are on the summer reading lists will be featured.  You are welcome to purchase any books for yourself or your children (ebooks or traditional print) and a portion of the weekend sales will go toward the St. Michael's Library. This Book Fair is open to all, parents, staff, family and friends. If you plan to use a Barnes and Noble card, your discount will be honored. All you need to do is mention St. Michael's at check out and give this voucher number: #11110673. The voucher number can also be submitted with purchases at any other Barnes and Noble store during the dates of the Book Fair.

Please see the attached information and voucher for the Book Fair in the left column under Attachments.

This is a grand experiment, and here's hoping we are able to raise some dollars for new library books! You are welcome to share the voucher number with all your family and friends.  Thank you for your support of the St. Michael's Library!

School Uniforms

Beginning September 2013 all uniforms will need to have the St. Michael's logo. This includes sweatshirts, blouses, polo shirts, and jumpers. True Grits will only be selling uniforms with this logo, and the uniform exchange will not include any uniforms that do not have it. This year was the grace period for wearing uniforms without a logo.

Please also see the attached flyer from True Grits about the Summer Sale!

St. Michael's Arts & Science Summer Camp

Please take a look at the attached flyer (in the left hand column) for the summer camp being offered on campus for entering 1st-5th grades.

ECE News

We are so appreciative of all the MANY packages of Model Magic that Sawyer Stevens, Marley Hartnett, Sophie Allaye-Chan, and the Gallaway family donated to our class.  Our rainforest creatures could not have been completed without all of it.  Kai Allen, Matthew Franc, Claire Knox, and Isabella Bollinger were so kind to bring the rolls of paper towels.  Sawyer Stevens also donated several large bags of hot glue sticks, and we have already used many of them making our rainforest animals.  Grandparents Day was wonderful and we loved singing for our grandparents and having them visit in the classroom.  Michelle Casagrande and Sara Bollinger were great photographers and captured some darling memories for us!  Thank you ALL for your generosity!!
