As the old song goes, "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." We are in a time of change at Merrick, with goodbyes to several Trustees who have served us well, and a welcome to five new Trustees to help guide us in 2014 and beyond. In addition we welcome Development and Communications Director Karen Herrera to the team, read more below on Karen and her goals for Merrick in 2014.
This month, both staff and clients helped spread holiday cheer in the community with a gift and food drive for families at a local elementary and the Vadnais Heights Lions. Pictured here are staff and clients with wrapped gifts awaiting delivery.

Meet Development & Communications Director Karen Herrera
Dear Friends of Merrick, Inc.,
In my first few weeks at Merrick, I have been delighted by the warm welcome I have received by clients, staff and volunteers alike. Everyone is very helpful as I learn so many new facts, names and acronyms, all while identifying the best ways for me to share the many successes clients at Merrick have every day, and raise mone
Merrick welcomes Karen Herrera to the Director Team
y to support our outstanding programs.
Community is very important to me, and I have already witnessed the outpouring of support this community has for Merrick. I grew up in the area (White Bear Lake) and graduated from the College of St. Benedict with degrees in Spanish and government/political science. After a two-year volunteer stint of teaching in a high school in Belize, Central America, I accepted an administrative support position in the development office of a local nonprofit organization. My interest in fundraising grew out of the variety of projects I was involved in at the charity.
After holding development officer positions within several area nonprofits, I began at Merrick in 2013 as the Development and Communications Director, overseeing fundraising, donor stewardship, events, and communications. I have heard about the really great events Merrick hosts and I can't wait to join in the fun and help make a difference in the lives of clients. Some of the other projects I will be working on are increasing the number of grants awarded to Merrick and increasing support by individuals.

My husband Cadex who hails from Belize, and I are raising three sons in White Bear Lake. Away from the office, I volunteer for my sons' Cub Scout Pack as the Committee Chair, and manage their soccer teams as well. In the soccer off-season, I am a hockey mom to all three of the boys. I am an avid MN Twins fan - even in the "rebuilding years," and I am a fierce competitor when it comes to trivia games (and just about any other game as well).

Wishing you well in the New Year,
Karen J. Herrera

Ted O. | Enhanced Services

It is with sad hearts we share the news that long-time client Ted O. passed away on November 27th at the age of 65 years. Enhanced Services staff and clients were very attached to Ted. He was an active guy who rarely sat down, unless it was to work, and in his persistence, managed to talk staff into frequent walks through the building and grounds each day. He didn't speak in words, but communicated very effectively with his actions. Ted's high energy level and constant movement required staff to be on their feet and remain alert. In recent years, his deteriorating medical condition required staff to be vigilant, as demonstrated by the life-saving actions they took earlier this year when he experienced a medical emergency.

Ted O. is remembered fondly by staff and peers

"Thanks to Ted," Dede Hauck, Support Service Coordinator reports, "We are in good shape, are well prepared, and ready for anything. His smile will remain within our walls as we remember him fondly."
