We partner with:
IPS logo
IPS Worldwide, headquartered in
St. Paul, began operations in 1988 when a group of employees from a former crane manufacturer combined their talents and established a small company called IPS. Their vision was to provide the crane industry with top quality replacement parts and services in a quick and efficient manner which they have been doing ever since.

Thanksgiving

logo_new

Thankful
Greetings!

As the season of gratitude is upon us, we extend a heartfelt thank-you to all those who strive to make the world a better place. Whether you are a donor, business partner, trustee, family member, or your professional work touches people with disabilities, we honor and appreciate your contributions to our mission to empower adults with disabilities.

In this issue join the Royalty Family in a salute to JWB, and read about our Give to the Max Day 2012 campaign to benefit the Adult Day and Memory Care Services program in North St. Paul. Finally, meet Sonia H., a client at Merrick who shows us that one's spirit is not defined or limited by one's disability and find out what her mom did to help her own family and others understand their unexpected journey.

Again, we extend our deepest thanks for your continued support and wish you and your family and friends a Thanksgiving filled with all the things that matter most.

JWB thanks the Royal Family
JWB thanks the Royal Family for recognition of his volunteer efforts

A planned visit from the St. Paul Winter Carnival's Royal Family on Thursday, November 15 turned into a major surprise for Executive Director John Wayne Barker as King Boreas honored him as one of 76 volunteers being recognized by the 76th Royal Family this year. See more photos and a video of the presentation on our Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/Merrickinc

GTMD delivers beyond goal

In partnership with GiveMN, Merrick participated in the annual statewide giving event, Give to the Max Day, on Thursday, November 15. We had a generous matching grant of $2,000 from our business partner Kowalski's Markets which was met by early afternoon thanks to our awesome supporters.

The funds raised through Give to the Max Day will go towards the recently opened program site in North St. Paul for Adult Day and Memory Care Services (ADS/MCS).

A ribbon cutting was held for this new program on Tuesday, November 13 and was attended by business partners, supporters, staff, and State Senator Chuck Wiger. Funds from Give to the Max Day will be used to purchase memory-enhancing games and puzzles, buy art and craft supplies for individual projects based on people's identified passions, enable clients to go on community outings to venues like the Science Museum of Minnesota, and for the purchase of a lift-chair recliner for mobility-challenged clients to rest and relax with ease. A huge thank you to all who donated on Give to the Max Day and for the ongoing support of our mission from Kowalski's Markets.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
Sonia H. | Alternative Services

Sonia
Sonia shares a smile

Sonia H. spends her weekdays in Alternative Services. She enjoys assisting in the greenhouse with projects and receiving the sensory benefits of horticulture therapy. You will often see her hiding treats from Jazz, the pet therapy dog and lighting up the room with her excitement when he finds them in her chair. She's also been known to flirt with all of the young men in the hall during departure time.

What can we say about this groovy gal that isn't evident to anyone who engages with her? We all know that she is more than just a pretty face. The character in her eyes shines brightly, and she can accomplish more with her facial expressions than most could running all over the building. She melts people with her smile, and for fun, purposely runs over staff with her wheelchair! A word to the wise-anything left unattended on her tray will be "accidently" tipped over, thrown, or simply disappear. Most are not exactly sure how she does it, but the glimmer and satisfied smirk in her eyes gives her away every time!

In an effort to relate Sonia's situation to her school classmates, Sonia's mom wrote a book titled Princess Sophia's Gifts which at it's essence is the true story of their family's survival in the wake of a personal tragedy. Written as a fairy tale, the story provides a way to examine the gifts or personal strengths within everyone, especially those who are different. Read more about "the story behind the story" here: www.aheartt.com/PDF/Story-Behind-The-Story.pdf and look for the beautifully illustrated and inspiring book on sale at upcoming Merrick events.

Sonia definitely reinforces the belief of the mind being all powerful over the body. Even though this beautiful young adult has difficulty using her voice or body to communicate, she uses the power of her eyes through assistive technology to express her ideas and concerns. Her highly expressive face draws others in. She is truly special and staff feel privileged to spend their workdays with the lovely, sweet, and spunky Sonia
