Celebrate National Book Month with Us!



October brings all of the seasonal elements that make it the perfect month to settle in with an array of good books. Cooler weather, falling leaves, and the entire ambiance of Fall come together in October, which is National Book Month.

Each year, in combination with National Book Month, we offer our Utah Humanities Book Festival in celebration of all things literature. This year, our 16th annual festival, is another

St. George Book Festival

We're very pleased to announce the return of our sister festival to the south. The St. George Book Festival is back and better than ever this year with a full week of authors to whet your literary palate from October 14-19. Authors will be visiting schools, libraries, and other venues around the St. George area.

Screenwriter, horror author, six-time Bram Stoker Award winner and Halloween expert Lisa Morton discusses her acclaimed history of All Hallows Eve and explains how our favorite fall day came to be. Morton began her career in Hollywood, co-writing the cult favorite Meet the Hollowheads, but soon made a successful transition into writing short works of horror. Her book The Halloween Encyclopedia
was described by Reference & Research Book News as "the most complete reference to the holiday available," and Lisa has been interviewed on The History Channel and the Discovery Channel's as well as in The Wall Street Journal as a Halloween authority.

The King's English Bookshop present an evening with renowned YA author James Dashner. Dashner will be joined by author Sara Zarr to talk about his new book Eye of Minds, which delves into the darker side of our ever-online world. Michael is a gamer who spends more time on the VirtNet than in the actual world. The VirtNet offers total mind and body immersion, and it's addictive. And the more
hacking skills you have, the more fun. But, some technology is too dangerous to fool with, and recent reports claim that one gamer is going beyond what any gamer has done before: he's holding players hostage inside the VirtNet.

Torrey House Press and the King's English present Charlie Quimby, whose new book, Monument Road, is creating a big buzz in the publishing world. Monument's Leonard Self, has spent a year unwinding his ranch, paying down debts, and fending off the darkening. Just one thing left: taking his wife's ashes to her favorite overlook, where he plans to step off the cliff with her into a stark and beautiful landscape. But Leonard finds he has company on a route that intertwines old wounds and new insights.

The Guest Writers Series at the University of Utah and the Utah Humanities Council present poet Mary Ruefle. Ruefle is the author of Madness, Rack, and Honey: Collected Lectures and Selected Poems. She has published ten books of poetry, a book of prose, and a comic book. She is also an erasure artist, whose treatments of nineteenth century texts have been exhibited in museums and galleries, and include the publication of A Little White Shadow. Ruefle is the recipient of an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Guggenheim fellowship, and an NEA fellowship. The reading on Thursday evening will be followed by a colloquium Friday morning.
