Cynthia Buckingham, UHC Executive Director

The Community Foundation of Utah has, for the fourth year, recognized fifty individuals who are making a measurable, but often unsung, difference in the lives of Utahns through innovation, collaboration, and commitment to the common good.
Called the "Enlightened 50", or E-50, members are nominated by the community. Each of the nominees then selects five individuals who they feel most meet the criteria. The top fifty were recognized at an event on Thursday, June 6th.
This year's winners come from across Utah. All are pioneering original and sustainable approaches to the critical issues facing our state and its people.
Others honored this year who have a connection with the Utah Humanities Council include Luis Garza and Brandy Farmer (Comunidades Unidas), Kerry Bate (Salt Lake County Housing Authority), Leticia Bentley(Moab Valley Multicultural Center), Mark Alvarez (community advocate and Public Square speaker), Peter Corroon (former Salt Lake County Mayor, Ninigret Group), Rosie Hunter (U of U Neighborhood Partners), Terry Kogan (U of U Professor of Law), Nan Seymour (Local First Utah), Ilana Schwartzman (Rabbi of Congregation Kol Ami), and Merrill Bateman (Past President of BYU).
The criteria for this recognition are:
- An innovator - pioneering original and sustainable approaches to the critical issues facing our state and its people
- A builder - committed to community engagement and the common good
- A visionary - most likely to make a profound mark on Utah's quality of life

Utah Arts & Museums recognized 16 certifying graduates of the Change Leader Institute, an innovative leadership development program for people interested in advancing their communities through culture and the arts.
"Change Leaders across Utah are strengthening their communities through arts and culture," said Lynnette Hiskey, Director of Utah Arts & Museums. "We are pleased to welcome these new graduates to the network. They have already made an impact with their certification projects, and we look forward to following their progress as they engage with each other and with their communities."
Jean's certification project was the Clemente Course in the Humanities at East High which involves AVID students in a college-level humanities course as part of their high school curriculum (AVID is a program serving students from groups that are underrepresented in college.) The Clemente Course is a UHC partnership with Westminster College, the University of Utah, University Neighborhood Partners, and the Salt Lake City School District.

Robin Smith, Venture Alumna and Westminster College graduate
|
Robin Smith, an alumna of UHC's Salt Lake City Venture Course, just graduated from Westminster College!
At graduation, Robin was awarded a top prize: the Neisen R. Bank Memorial Award, presented each year to a senior, selected by the faculty, "for academic performance, citizenship, extracurricular activities, and for overcoming personal challenges to achieve his or her goals." In the fall, Robin will be going to Loyola University in Chicago for a double masters in social work and child development.
UHC salutes Robin and encourages anyone who believes they missed out on college to apply to the Venture Course. Classes begin in September in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Cedar City. UHC partners with Westminster College, Weber State University, and Southern Utah University to offer Venture.
Robin is also mentioned in a recent Salt Lake Tribune article. Congratulations to Robin and her life-altering accomplishments!
