Local Groups Recognized at IFA's HousingIowa Conference
|
We are thrilled to announce that the hard work of two local partners has been recognized at the Iowa Finance Authority's HousingIowa Conference Awards Luncheon earlier today!
Congratulations to Primary Health Care for winning the first ever HousingIowa Innovation Award! The award recognizes " initiatives that portray excellence in affordable housing, showcasing the best of design, collaborations, resources leveraged and unique solutions that help meet an Iowa affordable housing need." The PHC team (pictured at right) was recognized for their effort to rehouse 68 displaced residents from the now closed Hotel Randolph in fall 2013. To read more about PHC's award-winning work at the Hotel Randolph, check out our past coverage here and here.

Another congratulations is in order for Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity (left), who received the Single-Family Housing Development award for their new construction and rehab efforts throughout our area. This award recognizes programs that advance the field of affordable housing in the state of Iowa. Habitat has built more homes in the City of Des Moines than any other builder, nonprofit or for-profit, since 2009. To read our past coverage of Habitat's Rock the Block event, click here. Great job, Habitat team!
Join us in thanking Primary Health Care and Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity for their outstanding work! We are proud to work with such dedicated people each day in advancing affordable housing for all Polk County residents. |

Viva East Bank! A new coalition for neighborhood revitalization
|
People from all over the metro are joining efforts to transform three urban core neighborhoods. In partnership with the City of Des Moines, Capitol East, Capitol Park and MLK Jr. Park - collectively, the East Bank -- have recently developed neighborhood revitalization plans, creating action steps to enhance and improve their neighborhoods. The neighborhood plans speak to the assets of each individual area, but common threads opened the door for the three neighborhoods to partner together to make the plans a reality.

Meet Claire Richmond UI grad student works on thesis at PCHTF
|
Hi, I'm Claire. I am a graduate student at the University of Iowa, pursuing degrees in public health and urban planning. This fall I am happy to be working with the Polk County Housing Trust Fund on my thesis project, which will involve obtaining public input on needs related to affordable housing. I am interested in ways the built environment impacts health and well-being, and this project will allow me to explore health outcomes specific to affordable housing in Greater Des Moines.

Steve Eggleston Has the Floor Personal patience, professional push
|
I married for the first time last November - at age 57. You might expect I would take a position of good things come to those who wait. While that was certainly the case in my personal life, professionally serving in the Community Development and Affordable Housing industry, and with reductions in funding for these important endeavors, I am a big proponent of demanding more, planning for targeted outcomes and being intentional in what we do to improve our lives and communities.

How many people have been housed this month?
|
Continuing the work started with our community's participation in 100,000 Homes this spring, the Outreach team at Primary Health Care has been hard at work helping people experiencing homelessness find permanent housing.
In August, PHC housed 34 people, for a grand total of 65 since July 1. Great work, PHC!
