Our Neighbors Are Ready to Jazz Up Your Summer!
They're back!  Our campaign neighbors had so much fun at last summer's Waveland Park concert that they'll be returning for all sixteen Jazz in July concerts this year.

Join Metro Arts and Polk County Housing Trust Fund in celebrating our city's neighborhoods with the Jazz in July Neighborhood Passport!  Look in the middle of your Jazz in July program (or online here) to find your passport, and get it stamped at each free concert in neighborhoods throughout the metro for a chance to win prizes from local merchants each night.  Plus, get stamped at 12 concerts for a chance to win a grand prize package at the series finale at West Glen on July 26!

New Housing Solutions
New Homes for Public Housing Residents
From the Des Moines Municipal Housing Agency

In September, 2013, the Des Moines Municipal Housing Agency (DMMHA) began offering newly constructed single family homes to Public Housing residents. Through the use of Replacement Housing Factor funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the DMMHA initiated development of nine scattered site single family homes (3, 4, and 5 bedrooms) to meet the demand on its Public Housing waiting list.  Additionally, this development effort was supported by a $100,000 grant from the Polk County Housing Trust Fund.

DMDC Takes Our Mission to Washington
Eric Burmeister reflects on a trip to our nation's capital
"Why Washington?"  Two years ago I would have asked the same question.  In 2012 the PCHTF was moving ahead with a new strategic plan to better define the organization, focus its mission and enhance its value to the community.  The Board was not satisfied with being just a conduit for funds.  The phrase "go to organization" was the one used most frequently during those early days.  I'm not sure any of us had a definition of what that meant, nor could point to concrete examples.

What Housing Do Artists Need?
ULI Iowa event explores intersection of art & development
Join Urban Land Institute Iowa for a discussion for how the real estate development community can support the arts in Greater Des Moines. "Intersection: Where Arts, Development, and a Vibrant City Converge" will be held June 5 from 5-7 at the Des Moines Social Club. The event will bring together real estate developers, artists, actors, musicians, and interested community members to discuss what the region needs to build a stronger arts and music scene. PCHTF will be on hand to talk about affordable housing, but attendees will also discuss performance space, practice space, studios, and transit, among other issues. Swimming, Retiring and What Happened in Between
The bookends of my working life - giving swimming lessons as a teen and now retiring from the PCHTF - have provided a perspective different than I ever imagined before and after my 30 years in state government. This Friday I will be retiring from the Housing Trust Fund and have been invited to share a few insights about my life and observations on affordable housing.
