Did You Know?
As the Today Show's "Wealthiest City in America", you know that Greater Des Moines has a great supply of high-paying jobs. What you may not know is that with every new high-income job, new low-income jobs are created. Each new worker moving to Des Moines will spend money on goods and services, creating demand for jobs like cashiers and baristas.

For example, a new job in the insurance industry will create 1.41 new service jobs, according to a 2007 ISU study. This means that the addition of 225 jobs to Athene's headquarters in West Des Moines planned for later this year could create as many as 317 new service jobs, held by people like those featured in our "Can I Be Your Neighbor?" campaign. This is good news for the economy, but as we add jobs to our region, we must also plan to add affordable housing.

Record Year Brings New Opportunities
United Way project to lift 25 families out of poverty

United Way of Central Iowa announced last month that they raised a record-breaking $27.5 million in their 2013 campaign - $200,000 over their goal.  The organization raised $900,000 more than last year and received donations from 42,000 individuals, a testament to the generosity of the Des Moines community and to broad community support for UWCI.  This incredible show of support will enable the organization to continue funding the great work of its community partners and to further its mission in new ways.

Connecting for a Sustainable Future
Hellyer blogs about lessons learned in Salt Lake City

"Sustainability is about making connections."  Of many lessons learned over three days of workshops at the Sustainable Communities Leadership Academy in Salt Lake City, this one resonated with me the most.  This is a crucial moment for the Tomorrow Plan - we will now move from envisioning our future to building it.  As we move forward, we cannot forget the value of connections.

Board chair reflects on an eventful year
In one word, this was a year of FIRSTS.

Some were visible, such as our first Affordable Housing Week in April of 2013. Mayoral proclamations supported our mission of providing safe, stable and affordable housing. Our first annual Design Challenge had over 50 high school students competing to design an affordable home for a fictional Des Moines family.
