Did You Know?

A new national study of renter households by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies shows that the demographics of the renter population mirror the diversity of the United States as a whole. While renters are commonly assumed to be young, single, lower-income people, the data shows that this is not always the case. While young, single people are a large group of this population, renters are fairly evenly distributed among ages, household types, and income levels. Contrary to this widely held view of renters, there are nearly as many renter households with children as without, and 4 out of every 10 renter household heads are 45 or older.

The 2014 session of the Iowa Legislature starts on Monday, January 14. While issues like education, healthcare, and property taxes often dominate the media coverage of the work done by the Governor and the Iowa Legislature, one lesser noticed, but important item in the state budget is funding for the State Housing Trust Fund. Monies in this fund are allocated via a formula created by the Iowa Finance Authority to twenty-six local housing trust funds across Iowa.

Renting On the Rise New Harvard study predicts the future of the American housing market
|
The combined effects of the Great Recession and changing demographics have created rising demand for rental housing, according to a new report by Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies. As rental vacancy rates in markets across the country reach historic lows, rents have risen. This trend, expected to continue for the next decade, poses a unique challenge to affordable housing. As rents rise, how can low-income households continue to pay their bills?

Sean Pelletier Has the Floor Lifelong lessons impact advocacy
|
Some people are moved to advocate for something because of a personal experience, others because of what they have experienced through others. My support for Affordable Housing is because of both.
