Comprehensive Inventory Underway
On February 1, 2013 the PCHTF Board of Directors received a written and oral update from Dr, Jane Rongerude of Iowa State University on an affordable housing inventory commissioned in 2012. The entire report will not be completed until fall of 2013 but initial research provides meaningful insights.
In 2007 CommonBond acquired 100 units of affordable housing in the distressed Capitol East neighborhood of downtown Des Moines from a for-profit developer to preserve these much needed units as affordable. The rehabilitation of 60 units was completed in 2011. (Boomsbury Village shown)

I once heard it said the American dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon, but a relay. Our families (and communities) don't always cross the finish line in the span of one generation. But each generation passes on to the next the fruits of their labor. One American dream my parents struggled with while raising us in Chicago was to own a home. I was the seventh of 11 children and the issue of providing affordable housing is a very personal one for me.
