What with icy winds, snow, and the corresponding transportation upheaval, 2014 has certainly begun on an exciting note!

Luckily we're always prepared, and you can be, too, with some tips on winterizing your pup! Well, maybe winterizing isn't the right word, but just like a car (or you, for that matter) your dog needs a bit of TLC to keep in tip top shape during the harsh winter months!

And just because it's frozen outside now doesn't mean you should forget about water. Dehydration has some serious repercussions, so make sure your furry friends have plenty to drink!

Now that the holidays have passed, it's a great time to prepare for the coming year. For instance: does your family have an emergency preparedness plan, one that includes your pets? We have the scoop on a free workshop that has some great advice! So what are you waiting for? Mush on down!

Polar-Vortex-Proof Your Pooch

The Polar Vortex has brought a flurry of b-r-r-r-y weather to NYC! And if the cold is nipping at your nose, you know your dog is feeling the bite! Here's how to protect him from the elements.

Brisk Walks: Shorter, more frequent strolls protect delicate ears and tails from frost-nip!

Dry Off: Wipe down their bellies and legs when you're done to remove dangerous de-icing salts and chemicals. Pay special attention to their paw pads, and make sure the skin isn't dried or cracked.

Leash Up: Don't let your dog play off-leash during a snow storm. Falling snow obscures familiar scents fast, and it's easier for them to lose their way.

Dress Up: All good New York dogs should have at least a fashionable collar for going out on the town, but when winter chill hits hard, the well-heeled pet will dress for warmth and style. Boots and jackets are great for any pooch, but are especially important for puppies and older dogs, who often have less tolerance for the cold.

And, as always, the ASPCA and AMVA have a wealth of wintery wisdom to share!

It seems odd to think of dehydration in the dead of winter, but ensuring your pets get enough water is a year-round concern.

Insufficient water intake can lead to a variety of problems. Dehydration affects the entire body, from digestion and food absorption, to difficulty in regulating body temperature. Cats are especially prone to urinary tract issues.

In dogs, dehydration is often a symptom of underlying health issues like a kidney disorder or even cancer.

It is important for pets to drink plenty of fresh, clean water on a daily basis, but what happens if they're picky?

There are many ways to encourage both cats and dogs to drink. Try different types of dishes in different locations, and make sure to change the water frequently. If your pet likes to tip bowls over, try a weighted dish.

Many pets seem to prefer their water to be mobile. Unfortunately, in an apartment that means a dripping faucet or even the toilet! The good news is there are many pet water fountains on the market that make drinking appealing to even the most picky pet's palate.
