Halloween is almost here! Keep the day a treat for your pup-kins and kit-kins with these helpful tricks!

Keep Treats out of Reach: Candy and chocolates are a danger to our waists, but for pets they can be fatal. Chocolate is notoriously bad for dogs, and cats can easily swallow a crinkly wrapper or decorative string which can lead to extremely dangerous intestinal blockages.

Avoid Candle-lit Pumpkins: Those flickering flames are fascinating to pets, and cats especially might be tempted to reach in with curious paws. Battery operated candles are the perfect solution!

Keep them Separated: If you expect a lot of trick-or-treaters, or if you're throwing a Halloween bash, make sure to make a safe haven for your pets. A pet might be tempted to dart out the door if it feels threatened or gets overly excited by the company.

Pet food and treat recalls are a real life horror story. Stay informed and read the label.

There is a disturbing and escalating trend in pet treat and pet food recalls, in particular jerky treats manufactured in China. In fact, there have been so many incidents of jerky-treat related illnesses, the FDA is finally taking action.

Concerned pet owners can keep pets safe by careful label reading and informed selection of high-quality foods. A good rule is to avoid anything made in China, and be sure to look for misleading wording like "Packaged in America" vs. "Manufactured in America." The former often means the food was made in another country, and shipped to the US for final packaging.
