Springtime Safety
Dear Pet Maven
Quick Links
Greetings!

In springtime, they say, a young pet's fancies turn to thoughts of love! At least, that's how we think the saying goes.

Maybe that's why Maine Coon Biggie Smalls is so proud of his new 'do; he does look very handsome. But you don't have to ask his secret, you can watch a video of his groom below!

Another springtime fancy for pets involves long walks in the park and delicious sun-baths. In light of that we've added a few safety tips to help ensure your pets stay healthy and able to enjoy the season.

Finally: Can an old dog and a new kitten find love? They can, if some people play matchmaker for them!

Springtime Safety for Pets

Springtime means long walks for pooches, and warm pools of sunshine streaming in the windows for the kitties. Here are some hints to keep the spring in their step all summer long!

Springtime is a popular time for gardeners to use pesticides and fertilizers. When walking your dog, keep an eye out for notices, and don't let him wander unattended.

Be vigilant for fleas and ticks, even if your pet doesn't go outside. Look for excessive scratching, and inspect her coat and paws for telltale signs!

Cats and dogs can both get allergies! Signs include sneezing, scratching, watery eyes and skin irritation. Ask your vet if you see these or any other changes in your pets' normal behavior.
Dear Pet Maven Advice Column,

We're thinking of getting a new kitten, but we're a little worried about our dog making the adjustment. What's the best way to introduce them? -- Fretful in the FD

Dear Fretful: Introductions don't have to stressful! Baby steps are key. Set up a safe place for the kitten, either a room or a large crate. Let them sniff each other through the barrier the first day, then slowly introduce supervised interaction. Increase interaction daily, depending on how they respond. Make sure to give your dog plenty of praise and reassurance so he knows his place in the family is not being threatened. In no time, your pooch and your purry newcomer will be the best of friends!
