Student & Tutor Profile:
Xavier and Audrey

xav and audrey
Xavier and Audrey "rocking" the William Tell Overture at Leschi's February Recital.
Though Xavier and Audrey have only been working together for one school year, each of them has been part of the SMP community for two years.

Xavier is a 5th grade violinist at Leschi Elementary School and is preparing for 6th grade at Washington Middle School. Audrey is a junior at Holy Names Academy and an accomplished violinist. She joined us last year because some of her friends tutored and she thought that it would be a good way to use her skills while volunteering, but she has continued because she has found that it's a lot of fun and very rewarding to tutor SMP students. As you can see from my interview with Xavier below, he has a big personality and these two have fun in their lessons!

Why did you choose to play the violin last year?

Xavier: I thought I could put my brother to sleep with a lullaby.  I figured out that it doesn't work.  I still really like the sound of the violin though.

What do you like about playing music?

Xavier: I get to work with my nice tutors and it's fun to perform for other people - I even got to play for my grandma in Indiana over the speakerphone.   Also, I can get famous.

What is your favorite memory from SMP?

Xavier: I liked rocking William Tell Overature with my tutor on the first recital this year.  My mom videotaped it, which is cool, but she doesn't have to show everyone.

What do you hope to do with your music over the next few years?

Xavier: I got into Intermediate Orchestra, so I'm going to play violin everyday at Washington Middle School.  I hope to go on a trip and perform in Vegas.

We at SMP are so grateful to work with students and tutors like Xavier and Audrey.  They are both dedicated, talented and fun; they will surely continue to do great things!

Seattle Symphony Members
Volunteer with SMP

Several Seattle Symphony Orchestra members recently approached us to ask how they might become involved in our program. With that offer and abundance of skill, it only took a moment to think up some opportunities to volunteer! Already, two SSO members have been working one-on-one with our students. In addition, we've had demonstrations and performances by SSO members on both brass and string instruments, with more in the works. We've also had donations of much-needed bows and strings. A great beginning to what we hope will become a wonderful partnership for years to come!

Seattle Music Partners is excited to be a part of The Seattle Foundation's giveBIG event again this year.  If you donate through the Seattle Music Partners giveBig profile  on May 15th, a percentage of your donation will be matched by local businesses.

What does it mean to giveBIG?

Every day our students giveBIG when they boldly put themselves out there, finding the courage to take risks, learn new notes and create new music.

Our volunteers giveBIG too, giving of themselves, week after week working with their students, putting in the time to develop a rapport and share their passion.

Music making creates community, a sense of belonging - and we provide access to all who want to learn - twice weekly, at multiple locations.

We ask you to help us sustain this important work by participating on May 15th.

Thank you for supporting tomorrow's musician today- in a BIG way!
