Honoring the Life of Dr. Thomas P. Bailey, Sr.
Dr. Thomas P. Bailey, who served as the seventh president of Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary, and before that as its academic dean from 1958 until 1975, passed away on Saturday, June 18 in Fort Myers, Florida. Dr. Bailey devoted over three decades of loyal service to Nyack/ATS, which also included his role as a history professor. The Board of Trustees named him Professor Emeritus of History of Religion upon his retirement in 1982.

President Michael G. Scales commented, "My dear friend, Dr. Tom Bailey, spent his career translating the heart and vision of A.B. Simpson into the world of modern higher education. As dean, he was instrumental in gaining the accreditation that expanded the reach and influence of Nyack Missionary College through the offering of recognized four-year degrees. As president, he secured the granting of master's degrees for what is now Alliance Theological Seminary.

Tom led Nyack to take tremendous steps forward without ever stepping off course, and he did so with uncanny gentleness, humor and grace. Perhaps no individual since Dr. Simpson has had more of a shaping influence on Nyack College and ATS than he. Every Nyack College and ATS graduate who has been afforded the opportunity to serve, to work and to excel because of his or her degree owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Tom Bailey. As do I."
Dr. Luis Carlo Concludes
Tenure as ATS Associate Dean

Several years ago, an Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS) alumni publication included a welcome letter penned by Associate Dean Dr. Luis A. Carlo. He wrote, "We seek to live out the heavenly vision and gospel message. We do so in faith and express it with an urban swagger, sense of bravado and indisputable resilience."

The words he used to describe his beloved ATS are actually quite autobiographical. Think of Luis Carlo and you have to admit there is swagger, bravado and indisputable resilience in this lifelong learner turned professor, preacher and powerhouse leader.

When the Apostle Paul wrote that God has "not given us a spirit of timidity" but love, power and a sound mind, that epitaph fits the man who fiercely loved and played a leading role in the life of Alliance Theological Seminary in New York City.

His colleague and Nyack College history professor, Dr. Lyndell O'Hara, once recounted his part in Nyack's history this way: "By the beginning of 1997, our student body more than doubled and additional staff and space were needed. Dr. David Turk moved from his position as English professor and director of the theatre program at Rockland to become director of the Manhattan site. Dr. Luis Carlo arrived to set up the ATS graduate program in the city, we acquired an admissions counselor--and the four of us shared a single office!" That's fierce love for a worthy cause and the fruit of the effort exerted speaks for itself.

Dean Carlo's illustrious career at ATS concluded with his recent resignation. However, this departure does not come without deep gratitude for his pioneering work in spearheading the establishment of the seminary program in Manhattan. No words could ever reward someone for the tireless service that was seen in public; neither for the unseen labor carried out in private. For his public and private commitment to the Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary community, we speak blessing on Dr. Luis A. Carlo, as he enters a new season as a son and a servant of God.

A published author of several books including, John Brown Speaks: Letters and Statements from Charlestown; John Brown, Emancipator; Freedom's Dawn: The Last Days of John Brown in Virginia; and Signs of Hope in the City: Ministries of Community Renewal.

Nyack's Historic Excavation: Something to Write Home About
Literally on the ground in Israel, Dr. R. Steven Notley, Nyack College's Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins and Director of Graduate Programs in Ancient Judaism and Christian Origins (AJCO), took time to share journal entries with home base in New York as students and staff continue their historic archaeological dig in July. (Read details about their exciting journey.)

Via email, Dr. Notley sent along the following snapshots of the group's first four days. Enjoy a mini gallery of photos here.

Day 1: Sunday, July 10. This was the first day of digging at el-Araj on the Sea of Galilee, including finding the first Roman period coin of the excavation. Juan Arias (pictured above with his wife, Sandra) is an AJCO student on the dig with other students and staff from Kinneret College Israel.

Day 2: Monday, July 11. Excavations at el-Araj included finishing the dig of a Mamluk sugar factory (The only one ever excavated in the country), finding an iron knife (?), pottery reading with Moti Aviam of Kinneret and our discussion of the importance of finding together a roof tile, marble and tessera (pieces of mosaic). These generally appear with a public building (synagogue or church). For the record, we have no mention of a church or Christian tradition attached to el-Araj.

Days 3 and 4: July 12 and 13. Our days involve rising before the sun, leaving at 5:30 and beginning on site at 6:00. Our finds thus far have included Crusader and Mamluk structures with finds also from late Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine which indicate settlement in these earlier periods. These layers likely will be found deeper. We return to our accommodations at Migdal where we wash the pottery finds and sit with Moti Aviam to sort and identify the pottery. Today included the find of an interesting cut ashlar stone. We have not yet identified its purpose.

More history to treasure and add to the Nyack story!

Intentional diversity is one of Nyack's core values. During his April 27, 2007 inauguration speech, President Michael G. Scales addressed diversity with the following words:

Why is being intentionally diverse so important to us at Nyack? We are gratified to know that we are a leader in diversity in higher education. We take this role seriously, but this is not the primary reason diversity is so important to us.

Being intentionally diverse is important to us because some challenges in our world can only be met when people, who would not otherwise come together, rally for the cause.

Our challenge...our cause is for our graduates to build the kingdom of God in every neighborhood, every profession, every socio-economic strata... "every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation." (Revelation 5:9). We cannot allow our differences to divide us. We are to be a microcosm of the world and the Kingdom of Heaven. No person is more important than another. Every person is owed ultimate dignity and respect.

If Nyack is to be truly academically excellent and globally engaged--now more than ever--we must be intentionally diverse.
Nyack Reps in the Nation's Capital for Second Chance Pell Grant Meetings
Nyack College Director of Financial Aid Steve Phillips, Nyack Prison Education instructor Cynthia Dorsey, and Nyack alumnus and Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison Executive Director Sean Pica attended the inaugural convening of the Second Chance Pell Pilot Program in Washington, D.C. (pictured l-r: Steve Phillips; Cynthia Dorsey; Dr. Louise Feroe, Hudson Link board member; Sean Pica; and John Bae, the Vera Institute).

The initiative allows incarcerated students to receive federal Pell Grant funding for postsecondary education. Last month, the U.S. Department of Education announced the 69 selected colleges and universities that will provide postsecondary education to nearly 12,000 students in more than 100 state and federal prisons nationwide. From a pool of more than 200 applicants, Nyack College was selected to participate in the program.

In 1994, Pell Grant eligibility for students in state and federal prisons was eliminated as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. Last year, the U.S. Department of Education announced the Second Chance Pell Pilot Program to restore educational access for some of those individuals, improving their chances of successful and productive reentry after they are released.

"Expanding educational opportunity for people who are incarcerated not only improves their lives, but strengthens our communities by preparing them to contribute to society rather than return to prison," said Fred Patrick, director of Vera's Center on Sentencing and Corrections. "We are thrilled that Nyack College is a partner in this important initiative to restore and expand access to college in prison."
