Remembering Dr. Ronald Eastman
Dr. Ronald E. Eastman, Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary's beloved Board of Trustees Chairman Emeritus, passed away on Saturday, August 1 in Fort Myers, Florida. Dr. Eastman devoted three decades of loyal service to Nyack/ATS, as a trustee beginning in 1985, and as the Chairman since 1995. He was named Chairman Emeritus in 2014.
The College and Seminary were the beneficiaries of Dr. Eastman's distinguished career with the Marriott Corporation, where he began in 1978 as Vice President of Hotel Development. Several promotions followed including his role as Vice President of Real Estate Development, Resort Development, and eventually to Group Vice President.
A transformative gift from Dr. Eastman and his wife, Marilyn, resulted in the birth of Nyack's Cheryl Phenicie School of Nursing, dedicated in 2010, and the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program that fall. More recently, following his heart for the college's growth and development, Dr. Eastman championed the effort and supported the opportunity to relocate the Nyack/ATS New York City campus to 2 Washington Street in historic Battery Park.
For so selflessly availing the College and Seminary of his time, his talent, and his treasure, Dr. Eastman was inducted into Nyack's President's Hall of Distinction in 2008. President Michael G. Scales commented, "It was a proud and humbling moment at Commencement 2008 to present Mr. Eastman with an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary, acknowledging his selfless service to us. But the real privilege for me has been that I called him friend and brother."
Many expressions of love and appreciation for Dr. Eastman were received by the College. Please click here to read these words from the Nyack/ATS community and beyond...

Chronicle of Higher Ed Names Nyack a "2015 Great College to Work For" For Five Consecutive Years!

The nation's leading higher education periodical, The Chronicle of Higher Education, has named Nyack College a "Great College to Work For" for the fifth consecutive year. The College received high marks in the areas of work/life balance, respect and appreciation, compensation and benefits, and diversity.
The Year End Faculty and Staff Luncheon is a signature campus event that best reflects Nyack's celebration of its employees each May. In addition to service awards for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or more years of employment, faculty and staff are celebrated with special recognition such as Online Educator of the Year, Student Development Professional of the Year, Athletic Coach of the Year, Enrollment Services Associate of the Year, Faculty Award for Support of Information Literacy and Critical Thinking, and the Commitment to Mission Awards presented to one faculty and one staff member.
Doctor of Ministry Dissertation Coordinator and Professor of Bible Dr. Frank Chan received the 2015 faculty Commitment to Mission Award. Employee love and loyalty for Nyack are perfectly summed up in Dr. Chan's words. "When I got the invitation to teach at Nyack, it was like being asked to play for the Yankees--it was my 'home team.' The Commitment to Mission Award is a wonderful affirmation that I belong here."
The Great Colleges program is one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition initiatives in our nation that showcases colleges for specific best practices and policies. Read more here.

Nyack College Launches "iSucceed"
A New School of Music Initiative for Fall 2015

The Nyack College School of Music will kick off the fall 2015 semester trading textbooks for iPads with the new initiative called iSucceed. All faculty and students in music courses, lessons, and ensembles will use an iPad Air2, 64GB. Music course materials will be loaded with apps specifically designed for education and music. Students will be charged a modest fee per semester for specific apps. Ensemble rehearsals will no longer require distribution of sheet music, which will also be on the iPads.
The new devices available through the college will include, at no additional cost, an Apple Care service contract that will cover broken or defective hardware. Not only is this innovative course delivery educating students in the use of technology as a method of teaching and learning, the electronic version of textbooks will represent a cost savings with the bonus of being extremely interactive.
Dean of the Nyack School of Music, Dr. Glenn Koponen says "I believe students will find the electronic version of textbooks fits a broader set of learning styles and enhances and deepens the learning experience. Our goal is to improve the quality of learning at Nyack."
Dr. Koponen (pictured above) adds, "Success in the future will be largely dependent on one's ability to use these devices and develop new ways to put them to use. As we prepare students to enter the workforce, it is our desire that School of Music graduates be the best possible candidates in their vocations, prepared in the use of current and future influences and developments in technology."
The Nyack College Rockland School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Learn more about Nyack's School of Music.

Fall 2015 Launch for School of Social Work's New MSW Program at Nyack

The Nyack College School of Social Work will launch its Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program with two concentrations--Clinical Social Work Practice and Leadership in Organizations and Communities this coming fall under the leadership of its director, Dr. Mayra Lopez-Humphreys (pictured at right). The new program was approved in June by the New York State Education Department.
Says Dr. Lopez-Humphreys, "As the first Christian MSW graduate program in New York City, it is our vision that the work being done within our MSW program--whether in the classroom, through scholarship, or in service to the community--our faculty, staff, and students will seek to create a better world through the vocation of social work. In doing so, we respond to and reflect the call to love our neighbors and become an "extraordinary force" that extends compassion and justice in the world."
Nyack's Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the process is underway for the master's degree program.
Nyack's 63-credit program is the first MSW offered by a Christian college in New York City. A one-year advanced standing option is available for students who enter with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program within seven years of graduation and who meet admissions requirements.

Class of 2015: Do you have concerns about health insurance options following graduation?
Some of you will secure new coverage through an employer, but others may need short-term
coverage until they lock down their first job. While Open Enrollment via the Affordable Care Act (ACA) doesn't begin until November 1, 2015, the end of student health insurance is classified as a Qualifying Event, so many of our newest alums qualify for a Special Enrollment Period for 60 days following the end of student health insurance coverage. If coverage is needed, an opportunity to purchase an ACA-compliant policy via the Private Health Insurance Exchange is available through the Alumni Insurance Program.
Visit our Alumni Insurance Program for all of the coverages available or call our Program partner at 888-404-3121 for free quotes and additional information.
