Nyack College Celebrates the Tenth Anniversary of Social Justice Day

The campus community of Nyack College gathered with elected officials, community leaders, and Rockland County residents at The Nyack Seaport on Sunday, January 18 to celebrate a tradition that began a decade ago as a prelude to observing the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Nyack's Social Justice Celebration keeps alive Dr. King's dream of the "beloved community."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have studied the Nyack Seaport dining room and smiled. He would have seen that his decades of labor were not in vain. He would have enjoyed this visual of white, black, Jew and Gentile, men, women, and children gathering at the invitation of Nyack College to celebrate social justice.

Social Justice Award recipients, pictured with Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary President Dr. Michael Scales and Community Relations Executive Director Earl Miller are (l-r, standing) Miller, Andrea Winograd (Holocaust Museum & Study Center), and Scales; (l-r seated): Paul Galan (Holocaust Museum & Study Center, Board Chair), Alan Moskin (World War II veteran and guest speaker), Mr. Murphy; and Mr. Aldridge.

Nyack College with Hudson Link Conferred 24 Bachelor's Degrees at Fishkill Correctional Facility Graduation

Alumni Stories Are Proof of the Partnership's Success

On Thursday, January 22 at Fishkill Correctional Facility, 24 graduates received the Bachelor of Science degree in organizational management from Nyack College under the auspices of a partnership between the College and Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison. The noontime ceremony was held at the medium security prison for men located at 18 Strack Drive in Beacon, NY.

Nyack College President Dr. Michael Scales presided over the ceremony for this second Fishkill cohort. To date, 76 students have earned Nyack College degrees from the Hudson Link program, founded in 1998 when New York State and federal funding for prison education was discontinued. "We are delighted to be a part of this personally transforming program that infuses tremendous hope in the lives of the incarcerated," says Dr. Scales.

The 2015 commencement speaker was Jeffrey Deskovic. Deskovic was wrongfully convicted of a crime and after serving 16 years in prison, was exonerated and awarded $40 million by a federal jury. He is the founder of the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation For Justice, a 501(c)(3) organization committed to the prevention of wrongful convictions both in DNA and non-DNA cases and the reintegration of exonerees.
