Alliance Theological Seminary Milestone:
First Successful Dissertation Defense

Rev. Gershwin Grant, the first Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS) Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) candidate, successfully defended his dissertation, "Evaluating a Spiritually Formed Prayer Immersion Program for Members of the Conservative Baptist Church," on March 17. This milestone event took place at the Rockland County campus of the seminary. Dr. Ronald Walborn, ATS dean, moderated the oral defense, which was overseen by Dr. Frank Chan, coordinator for D.Min. dissertations.

Pictured above are (l-r) Dr. Paul de Vries, Dr. Ronald Walborn, Rev. Gershwin Grant, Mrs. Cynthia Grant, Dr. Torrey Robinson, and Dr. Frank Chan.

Born in London, England, Gershwin Francis Emmanuel Grant and his family moved to New York City when he was just a teenager. While attending the New York Institute of Technology to earn a degree in architecture, he became a Christian. Five years into his career as an architect, he pursued a career change to ministry by studying evenings and weekends at the New York School of the Bible, Seminary of the East, and Alliance Theological Seminary, while still employed by WYS Design Architects.

Rev. Grant has served as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Ossining, NY since 2003.

The dissertation committee included Dr. Paul de Vries, president of the New York Divinity School, who is also pastor of Immanuel Community Church in Manhattan and Dr. Torrey Robinson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Tarrytown.

Congratulations to Rev. and Mrs. Grant!

Nyack College Flutist Plays for
Sir James Galway

Nyack College School of Music (SOM) flute performance major, Luis Diaz II, a student at the flute studio of Nyack professor, Dr. Marie Herseth Kenote, was one of only three students chosen to perform in a flute masterclass with virtuoso flute player, Sir James Galway. This showcase took place in New York City at the Lucy Moses School on March 26, 2014 (Click here for overview).

Sir Galway allowed the Nyack junior (pictured above) to play his 20K Gold Nagahara flute to perform the virtuosic piece by Eugene Bozza "Image" for solo flute. This prestigious moment came with the bonus of Luis receiving "nuggets of gold" for flute performance from the legendary musician from Belfast, Ireland.

Says Nyack's proud mentoring professor, Dr. Kenote, "Truly this was an opportunity of a lifetime and a blessing from the Lord!"

Aramark Staff at Nyack Coordinates
Global Volunteer Day

As a part of its "Building Community Project," Aramark employees around the world recently participated in Global Volunteer Day. The team that services Nyack College chose to collect donations and create New Mother Kits for Care Net Pregnancy Center in Spring Valley, NY. With a "wish list" from Gloria Calo, Care Net's executive director, vendors were invited to contribute or offer discounts on items to be included in the kits. Marc Fahringer, Aramark district manager, supervised the project which was coordinated by Amelia Dantas and Debby Paine.

Nyack College and the Aramark staff were very generous in giving, which resulted in more than $5,000.00 worth of items on the Care Net's Wish List being collected and 50 New Mother Kits being put together. In addition to the kits, the Spring Valley organization received cases of diapers, strollers, car seats, pack 'n plays, computers, a microwave, and a projector.

Kudos to the volunteers for this wonderful outpouring of love and compassion!
