2012 Edison Award Winner Makes History in Space

 

SpaceX, the winner of a Gold Edison Award in 2012 for its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft, has just successfully docked with the International Space Station. The Dragon cargo capsule overcame some early mission challenges in ospacexrder to deliver badly needed science equipment, spare parts, food and supplies to the Station.  More about the mission...

Meet Colonel Powell

 

The Edison Awards is pleased to welcome Col. Pierre Powell to our 2013 Steering Committee. Pierre joins several other new Powell  Committee members this year, each of whom are being featured in our newsletter series.

 

Colonel John P. (Pierre) Powell (Retired) is currently serving as the President of PAMCO Investments Corp., a family investment holding company, managing assets for Oil & Gas Exploration, Private Equity, Real Estate and other business ventures.  He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2008 after 21 years of service.  He retired as the Vice-Commander of Air Forces in Afghanistan, responsible for 4,500 Airmen stationed at more than 27 locations across that country.

African Teen Wows MIT
  

Fifteen-year old Kelvin Doe bested 300 competitors and was rewarded with an invitation to join MIT's "Visiting Practitioner's Program," making him the kelvin youngest person ever to earn that distinction.  Kelvin invented batteries and a generator using materials he found in trash bins in his neighborhood. Innovate Salone, a national high school innovation contest held in Sierra Leone last year, challenged students to create solutions to some of their countries toughest problems.  Kelvin was inspired by the unpredictable and often absent electrical power he and his neighbors routinely endure.  More...

The Fastest Rollout in Post Foods' History
  

In today's marketplace, changing consumer tastes and the increasing strength of retailers can  challenge even the most nimble of companies. In a recent article in Ad Age, Post Foods execs recounted how two big retailers challenged them to deliver on a new cereal concept in an almost unheard-of tcerealimeframe.

 

In August, 2012, Post pitched the concept of Greek yogurt in cereal to Target and Walmart, who were so taken with the idea that they wanted it on the shelves, pronto. The desire to capitalize on the Greek yogurt trend led to Post's record-setting January delivery of Honey Bunches of Oats Greek Honey Crunch, in spite of several sourcing and manufacturing obstacles.
