NJBA in DC

Last week, an NJBA delegation consisting of Bob McAllan, Dan Finn, and Scott Taylor met with all of our NJ lawmakers and staff in Washington and NJBA Prez Paul Rotella was in the audience at the FCC's Net Neutrality meeting. We need all members to call our congressional representatives and encourage them to support the Local Radio Freedom Act (H. Con Res. 4 in the House and S. Con. Res 14 in the Senate.) Senators Lance and Frelinghuysen are original sponsors and we expect Congressmen LoBiondo, Pallone, Smith, Sires, and Pascrell to once again join on the resolution. All radio station employees should be ready to join the NJBA in the fight against the Performance Tax this year. This and other copyright issues that Congress is looking at this session can cost you your job. So, how can you join the fight? Call your Reps and Senators. While all of our reps seemed eager to support this important measure, a call or two from you can help make a difference in getting them to sign on sooner rather thank later. It's only your careers at stake and the safety and quality of life of your audiences that is at stake, so make the call today! Please call Senators Menendez and Booker, Congresswomen Coleman, Congressmen Norcross, Payne, MacArthur and Garrett at 202-225-3121 to ask for their support.

Lawmakers: FM Chip Activation is a Matter of Public Safety

The Federal Communications Commission should "do everything in [its] power" to ensure that FM chips in smartphones are activated, Reps. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., write in a letter to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. "For the benefit of the American public, ensuring all mobile devices are broadcast-radio capable is a critical component of this country's safety and homeland security," they write.  Inside Radio (free content) (3/5), Radio Business Report (3/4) This echoes NJBA President Paul Rotella's on-going  request of the Chairman made in April of last year and memorialized in a letter to the FCC in October of last year. In his letter, Rotella states: "... FM Chip activation may now rise to be a matter of national security in the uncertain environment we find ourselves in as we are barraged by terror and heath threats almost on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis...The NJBA respectfully requests that FM Receivers in smart devices be re-activated as a matter of public safety just as air bags and seatbelts in automobiles were required years ago. While information increasingly flows through mobile devices, broadcast services remain the most effective and efficient means of reaching the widest audience."

NJBA Hall of Fame Nominations Open

Each year, award shows pay homage to recording artists, songwriters, bands, actors, musicians or other personality in countless venues around the globe. After a lifetime of accomplishment, many of these celebrities are often paid a time-honored tribute and inducted into their particular industry's "Hall of Fame".  After having the honor of serving on our New Jersey Hall of Fame's Board, the NJBA was struck by the overwhelming fact that most of the Garden State's most well-known and successful luminaries were indeed all made famous by the very medium we create, promote, produce, nurture, maintain and love: broadcasting!  And so, we took special pride in the establishment of the NEW JERSEY BROADCASTER HALL of FAME. This year, we will be inducting our 2015 Class of NJBA Hall of Fame Inductees at our 68th Annual NJBA Convention and Gala in Atlantic City on June 17-18th!   In that regard, we ask our members to submit nominations of New Jersey broadcast luminaries for consideration for induction. Rules and entry forms can be found on our website www.njba.com.

Free Shazam Webinar March 19th

"What you can and can't learn from Shazam" from Coleman Insights offers five bullet points from a new study of music charts - and #1 is a good place to start. Namely, that "People only Shazam songs when they don't know them yet." The corollary? "It would be a mistake to assume your listeners no longer wish to hear a song simply because Shazam users are no longer Shazaming it." Example - "Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off' remained a top 10 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 23 weeks," though it dropped off Shazam's top 10 list after seven weeks. Read Matt Bailey's latest distillation from the research project here. Sun Broadcasting CEO Jason Bailey has already incorporated Shazam into his company's content and moving his radio business forward. You're invited to join a Coleman presentation on Thursday, March 19 at 2pm Eastern with a free signup here. Title - "When is a Hit a Hit" (Hat Tip Tom Taylor NOW.)

Free Legal Webinar on Music Licensing 3/25

NJBA pal Frank Montero, Esq., tells us a free The Music Licensing Webinar is being offered to NJBA Members on March 25th at 3:00-4:30PM. It will explain some basics of the Copyright Act as it applies to the performance of music over radio, television and the Internet, as well as the reproduction and synchronization of musical works and sound recordings. It will specifically explain the dual copyright that exists in every song that is performed on the radio, on television or via the Internet and the liability and how to clear those rights.  The webinar will also provide not only the actual process for clearing those rights and the likely costs involved but explains this in a framework which shows how every right relates to the others. This webinar will be presented by Kevin Goldberg of Fletcher, Heald & Hildreth, PLC.  Click here to register.

Our Thoughts and Prayers

WBGO President & CEO Amy Niles informed us last week: "It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of recently retired President and CEO of Newark Public Radio- Cephas Bowles.  Cephas had been diagnosed with a form of Leukemia approximately 2 years ago and had undergone a bone marrow transplant in November of 2013 in hopes of altering the course of the disease. Cephas was born in Newark, NJ and we could have had no better champion for this city and the music that was born of its culture- especially its tradition of organ music. When he was tapped to return to Newark to assume the leadership role at WBGO after working at public media station KUAT in Tucson, he joined the board of trustees of NPR and was very vocal in his campaign for diversity within the public radio system. Cephas was a very private man but certain elements of his life he wouldn't mind sharing-his commitment to Newark, yes. This music, most definitely. He was also a fan of the NJBA's good works and was very generous in his advice and support. But also his other main passions- public radio and all that it stands for, his connection to Syracuse University where he got his start in radio and his family, most importantly his beloved wife Linda. In a letter to Cephas' colleagues, NJBA President Paul Rotella wrote: "He was a giant of broadcast and a human being dedicated to serving the communities he loved. He shall be missed." The NJBA extends its deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.
