David O'Brien to Present Building Emotional Intelligence in Leaders Workshop


As part of David's ongoing partnership with the CT Association of Nonprofits, Center for Professional Development, he will be delivering his very popular Building Emotional Intelligence in Leaders workshop on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Worker's Compensation Trust in Wallingford, CT. In this highly interactive, 3-hour workshop, participants are provided with the opportunity to evaluate their current level of EI competence while also exploring a wide range of techniques for increasing their leadership influence and impact. David O'Brien to be Featured Guest on The Success Design Radio Show


David O'Brien will be the featured guest on the February 19, 2013 broadcast of The Success Design internet radio show with Host Beth Shankle-Anderson. The 30-minute interview will begin at 2:00 p.m. EST and will include an interactive segment where David will take questions from listeners. David O'Brien to Present The State of Leadership 2013 at SHRM Event  


David O'Brien will be the featured speaker at the SHRM Western Connecticut chapter's monthly lunch meeting on February 26, 2013. His presentation entitled The State of Leadership 2013 offers many valuable insights into the key dimensions of leadership success in 2013 and beyond. It also provides a framework for expanding HR's influence, impact and value. This program has been approved by HRCI for 1.50 strategic business recertification credits. I hope that 2013 is off to a great start for you both in and out of work. As I begin the New Year, I am mindful of the many opportunities that this new beginning presents. Chief among them for me is the opportunity to take my leadership to a higher level, not just as a leader or consultant both also as a parent, spouse, friend and brother.


As the New Year unfolds, let us all be mindful of the opportunity we have to be the role models of leadership excellence in every role that we play.

DevelopmentOne of my favorite Dilbert cartoons features the fictional character Alice who is instructed by her "pointy haired" boss to write a performance review of herself for him to sign. Alice asks, "What will our seven layers of management be doing while I manage myself?" Responding to the angry look on her bosses face, she adds "Sorry, I'll ding myself for that on my evaluation". Her boss then replies, "If you can't find me, have Carol my secretary sign my name on your performance review".


While there is certainly some humor to be found in this and other Dilbert cartoons, there is nothing funny about skirting one of leadership's most critical responsibilities, namely; employee development discussions. All too often these discussions get relegated to the dreaded once-a-year routine where little benefit actually occurs.
