The South Carolina Section sponsors minigrants to suport NCW activities that provide for outreach to the public.  To see last year's winning applications and to download an application for this year visit our website.  The application deadline is September 1.

Bill Carroll to Visit SC Section in October
  

Bill Carroll
Dr. Carroll holds a BA in Chemistry and Physics from DePauw University, M.S. from Tulane University, and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Indiana University.  Dr. Carroll served as President of ACS in 2005 and has chaired numerous committees for a variety of chemistry plastics, fire protection, and recycling organizations. He has served on expert groups commissioned by the United Nations Environmental Program, the U.S. EPA, and for three individual states. Among his many achievements, he received the Vinyl Institute's Roy T. Gottesman Leadership Award for lifetime achievement in the year 2000. 
 
Dr. Carroll will be the guest speaker at the section meeting on Friday October 11 in Charleston.  Details will follow in a subsequent e-news..

Executive Committee Update

ACS Logo The Executive Committee met in Columbia on Saturday August 3 to discuss plans for the remainder of 2013 and early 2014.

The National Committee on Constitution and By-Laws has approved our by-laws change and we will be holding our first election via electronic balloting in November.
 
Planning for hosting the 2016 SERMACS meeting in Columbia will soon swing into high gear.

Nobel Laureate to visit Clafin

Wolfgang Ketterlee
Dr Wolfgang Ketterle, 2001 Nobel Laureate in Physics, will speak at Claflin on September  26th in the Middleton Fine Arts Auditorium at 1 PM. He shared the prize for his work on Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute gases of alkali atoms, and for early fundamental studies of the properties of the condensates.

Angela Peters Named Vice Provost at Claflin

Angela Peters

Dr. Peters  has been appointed Vice Provost for Academic Programs. Dr. Peters has been a member of the Claflin University faculty since August 2001.  She most recently served as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and was named the Governor's Professor of the Year in 2005.  She also served as the Chair of the South Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society from 2009-2011 and was the recipient of the E. Ray McAfee Distinguished Service Award, American Chemical Society in 2013.
