The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.
February is American Heart Health Month. Remind your patients that if they have gout, they're more likely to have cardiovascular health issues - including heart disease, high blood pressure, blocked arteries and heart failure.
Maintaining a healthy serum uric acid level of 6 mg/dL or below is important to reduce risk for gout and cardiovascular disease. Encourage your patients to get a serum uric acid test to determine if they have hyperuricemia, and to get their blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked, as well.

Happy Valentine's Day from
The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
Remind patients this Valentine's day that anyone who is at risk or who is diagnosed with gout should follow a healthy, balanced diet. While there isn't a regimented gout diet, patients should avoid high-purine foods and beverages.
In addition to a balanced diet, uric acid-lowering therapies are the cornerstone of preventing gouty arthritis progression over time. Encourage your patients to keep serum uric acid levels to 6 mg/dL or below to reduce their risk for gout. Learn more about the treatment options available to your patients, here.
