Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
January 2016 Newsletter

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.

The New Year is a time to remind patients who are suffering or who are at risk for gout that they can start the year on the right foot and better manage their disease with the right treatment plan. Once an accurate diagnosis is established, therapies for flare treatment and urate-lowering medications can begin.

Patients should also be encouraged to live a gout-friendly lifestyle, by engaging in healthy habits such as exercising regularly and monitoring their diets. Share "The Gout Song" with your patients to remind them of the steps they can take to reduce their risk for gout and other comorbid diseases.

 Remembering Our Founders

On January 17 and January 19 we celebrate two influential people in history - Benjamin Franklin, one of our founding fathers, and Martin Luther King Jr., an American civil rights leader. The two men are famous for very different accomplishments, but not many people know that both shared a common struggle - gout.

Although history has associated gout with that of a stout, rich man, today we know this stereotype is far from the truth. Gout can affect anyone at any time - with certain risk factors increasing a person's risk.

Start the New Year with new materials. With gout incidence on the rise, an increasing number of medical professionals, across multiple fields of practice, will continue to be exposed to patients who suffer from gout and are seeking an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

GUAES recently hosted a roundtable discussion of medical professionals, who have vast experiences in diagnosing, treating and working with gout patients. Following the roundtable, GUAES worked with participants to develop a consensus paper that overviews strategies for medical professionals to more effectively manage and educate about gout.

Read the consensus paper here or use the 'Contact Us' form on GoutEducation.org to place an order for print versions of this material.
