The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming patients, like you, with resources to help you better understand gout diagnosis and treatment.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Research has shown a link between gout and diabetes - a disease in which blood sugar levels are above normal, due to either a lack of insulin in the blood or resistance to insulin. Studies have shown that insulin resistance may play a role in developing gout and that hyperuricemia may worsen insulin resistance. People who have gout and elevated uric acid levels are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and those who already have type 2 diabetes are more likely to have high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream.
According to new research supported by GUAES, few Americans and gout sufferers understand the connection between gout and comorbid health issues, such as diabetes. To learn more about gout and diabetes, download this brochure, or order print copies online at GoutEducation.org. Additional information about diabetes is available through the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org.

Gout is a widely misunderstood disease - and, as a result, few gout sufferers are getting the ongoing treatment that they need. In an effort to raise awareness about the severity of gout and further explore the connection between gout and diet, GUAES is encouraging those who have gout to participate in an online study supported by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). UAB recognizes that although gout can be better managed with the proper uric acid-lowering therapy recommended by your doctor, many patients are also interested in considering other non-pharmacological treatment options. If you have gout, please take a few minutes to answer the survey questions here.
While there isn't a regimented gout diet, those who have been diagnosed with gout or who are at risk for gout should follow a healthy, balanced diet. Learn more about gout and diet here.

Being diagnosed with or being at risk for gout is no fun and games. In a continued effort to raise awareness about the importance of knowing your target uric acid number, GUAES introduced a new comic from artist Shaun Boland to remind those who have or who are at risk for gout to go for a target number of 6.0 mg/dL or below.
Learn more about the "Go for 6" campaign and how to control your uric acid levels here.
