Take a Stand on Gout
Go For 6
Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
October 2015 Newsletter

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.

As you may know, studies have linked gout and hyperuricemia to several serious health issues -- including permanent bone, joint and tissue damage; kidney stones or renal disease; cardiovascular health issues; and diabetes. Despite this, new research supported by GUAES reveals few Americans and gout sufferers understand the connection between elevated uric acid levels and comorbid health issues.

To raise awareness about the link between gout and comorbidities, GUAES introduced a new, patient-focused brochure series. Four brochures - Gout & Bone/Joint Health, Gout & Diabetes, Gout & Heart Health, and Gout & Kidney Health - are now available through GoutEducation.org. In addition to the availability of each brochure, content about each main, comorbid health issue has been added to the website

 World Arthritis Day

October 12 is National World Arthritis DayWhile gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, just 37 percent of Americans know that gout is even a type of arthritis. There are also many other misconceptions about gout. In fact, one in five say they do not know what gout is at all and six in 10 admit to not knowing that gout is a chronic, life-long disease.

To raise awareness about the disease, and to reduce risk for gout and future flares, encourage your patients to get a routine blood test every six months and aim for a target sUA level of 6.0 mg/dL or below.

"Gopher" Six!

According to new research from GUAES, more than eight out of 10 Americans overall and six out of 10 people who have been diagnosed with gout say they do not know their target serum uric acid level. Additionally, just 38 percent of people with gout say they have had their uric acid tested within the past six months -- and two-thirds of Americans overall have never had their uric acid tested.

In a continued effort to raise awareness about the importance of knowing the target serum uric acid number, GUAES introduced a new comic from artist Shaun Boland to remind your patients who have or who are at risk for gout to go for a target number of 6.0 mg/dL.
